If you had the opportunity to go to Duke, Amherst, UChicago, Boston U, Dartmouth, Emory, USC, or Vanderbilt, which one would you go to, and why? As I'm sure you picked up, I got into all of these schools and right now I'm at just a completely standstill. I can make myself happy wherever I am so I would just like to hear your own opinions. Thank you :)

Hard choice. Congrats on having it.

I don’t think I would’ve gone to undergrad in the Midwest or the West Coast, and I have this inexplicable bias against my stereotype of USC, so I wouldn’t have chosen Chicago or USC. I wanted an undergraduate college with a campus and not an urban school, so Boston is out. That leaves Duke, Amherst, Dartmouth, Emory, and Vanderbilt.

I’d probably pick Dartmouth. It was one of my dream schools in high school. It’s a small liberal arts college. I went to a SLAC and I loved the intimacy and the individual attention you get from professors and students. But still, Dartmouth has a lot of prestige in the name (which is nice in casual conversation with people, lol). I like the sportsy focus and the fact that it’s in a tiny New Hampshire town - I know that sounds crazy because I’m a city girl, but what I found going to a small college in an urban area is that everyone left campus on the weekends to go to other things in the city. I wished I went to school in a small college town where everyone stayed on campus on the weekends and hung out with each other. I also wanted to get into the Greek scene in college (never did; the only sororities at my undergrad were NPHC and they have a weird system) and I hear Greek life is big at Dartmouth.

What are your primary fields of interest?

Are you nerdy? Artsy? Athletic? A partier?

juillet: Thank you for your response. And just to make sure, you said Boston was an urban school so it doesn’t have a traditional campus feel (greenery, people studying or hanging out with friends on the lawns, buildings all lumped together, etc.) because that’s what I really want in a college campus.
Marsden: I don’t really have primary fields of interest, I figured that’s what college is for. And I guess I’m nerdy. I’m in all the highest classes at my school and I like to watch Jeopardy! I really like dancing, pretty much any form, and I like to sing, so I guess that’s my artsy side. I ran track and threw discus, and I also did cheer for three years at my high school. I’ve never actually been to a high school party, but I really like to dance and have a good time so I’d probably party every once in a while.

Interesting. I think that moves Dartmouth down the list for you then (even though it is one of my favorite places!). Vandy is a bit traditional. That might be an issue for you. Duke and Amherst (esp given the ‘Five Colleges’ resources) have broad appeal and similar levels of excellence, with Emory close behind. USC and especially Boston U are outclassed in this group.

I’d probably pick Dartmouth or UChicago. All the schools you listed are wonderful academic-wise, but i think D and UC provide the most academic opportunities for students. Honestly, I also like them because of their northern locations. Though, Vanderbilt and Duke are schools i would definitely consider too…

I think you’ve posted this already and most people said Chicago or Dartmouth

vociferous: i posted before which school people think that I should attend. This post is about where they would want to go out of the choices I had listed. So I guess same basic concept, but there’s nothing on college confidential that says i can’t post similar topics.

I would pick Emory… coz its AMAZING! I honestly think it should come down to Amherst, Duke, Emory and Dartmouth… all four are great academically so it should come down to fit.

Any other suggestions?

I would pick Vandy, personally. Great school in an amazing location, and SEC sports to boot!

I was going to write a response, but then saw that Juillet wrote it all for me.

Amherst! The Five-College Consortium is amazing, and the Pioneer Valley is gorgeous. =)

Chicago …
