Hi Everyone!

Recently I have came upon this dilemma: I'd like to go to the first orientation session, but on the UCLA website it recommended that first-year students should wait until their AP scores are received (which will be around July 15) to attend the orientation. That means...I'll have to go to the 3rd orientation. If I go to the 3rd orientation, then I may not be placed in classes that I want because they don't have my AP scores! I'm just mostly concerned about math, because I want to skip the math placement test and get placed in a math class with my Calc BC score.

So...what do you guys think? First orientation without my AP score, or 3rd orientation?

Thank you so much for taking the time to read and respond!!!

I have the same question.

I asked them this exact question and basically they assured me that the best possible situation was to WAIT for your Calculus BC score that way you’ll know which math course to sign up in. That way you can get your math out of the way, if you’re not a mathematical major person or intending on going towards that major. So basically based on two years of receiving the AP scores the second week of July, there would be a grace period of 2-3 days seeing if the snail mail sucks nonetheless, by the day before you go to UCLA, you can call collegeboard for your score and try to tell the UCLA Orientation staff that you called collegeboard and will be officially a (3/4/5) that way UCLA can just sign you up and then if you didn’t get that score that you told UCLA’s staff, which would be highly unlikely since you paid $8 for the call, they might just drop you to a lower math course. Hey taking a lower math course might even up your GPA as long as you keep up the hard work =D

Nox

There isn’t that big a deal between the 1st and 3rd orientations anyways. As long as you go before like 106, then you’ll probably get at least 2/3 (if not all three) classes that you want.

I see I see…Thank you so much Nox and theespys69!

Nox, I just want to say once again that this was extremely helpful! thank you so much :)

lol i hope you, shirlieswirlie, got the session you wanted to go in. maybe i’ll see you there. im going to session 103, which is the perfect timing cause that’s when i’ll get my ap exams…if nothing goes wrong =D

Haha Nox just call me Shirley!
With a lot of luck I got first session, so I’m going to take that math placement test and tell them my AP score like you advised, and hope for the best.
But 103 is pretty darn ideal! Have fun choosing your classes!

going to session 104 cuz of the freshman summer program

mr2kool09, if you have freshman summer program, the College Summer Institute, doesn’t that mean you get the last session and then you start summer school? or is it some other program?

Just a quick question, I’m a little confused…
If I get a 3 or 4 do I still have to take the math placement exam?
My friend said not to sign up for the placement exam for orientation (I’m 104) so I didn’t because he said we’d get out of it with AP exam, but, should I just sign up for it just in case & change it later? I’m expecting a 4 on my AP exam for BC.

Im expecting a 4 on the BC exam too. I would sign up for the placement exam just in case because what happens if all of a sudden they don’t accept it? But most likely they will. And you will have your BC score and a backup with a placement exam just in case. If you don’t need it, then you can tell them that you don’t want to take it cause the BC exam will “waiver??” the placement exam. That seems reasonable. It’s a college, it isn’t a high school where they won’t believe what you say anymore!! =D

Noxfinitie, im doing the AAP Freshman summer program not the College Summer Institute

i went to session 110 last year… had an AWESOME schedule with all the classes i needed. i don’t understand why everyone thinks you need to go to the early sessions.

^thats really good to hear because i have to go to 110 and i was worried that i wouldnt get the classes i wanted…hopefully i get good ones!
