Which Orientation to go to?

Which orientation would anyone recommend going to? The first? Do classes fill up fast if you go to the last?

go to the earliest one you can. you’ll get classes you need, but you won’t have much option for times or choices for the writing seminars

But there’s a lot of options for students who go early though in terms of classes?

Yes.

You go into a room with computers and some advising people and go over your schedule and register. You can change stuff later of course.

One thing to take care of is to make sure you know what level of class you’re placed in or going in for a language.

I’ll just go to the first one then. I’m planning on majoring in Psychology and/or Sociology with a minor in Biology. Don’t know if that will be to complex - though, on the road to medical school.

You’ll probably end up taking Psych 101, Writing 100, a language, and either Bio 107 or Chem 101. Something along those lines.

Really? A language. I definitely do have an okay Spanish background so I am not opposed to it - but I would much rather take a class such as Sociology 101 or Philosophoy 101 (I am considering doing the Psych/Phil major).

Look at the requirements and see what you need to take, what you place out of, etc. I’d suggest looking up your college and reading its bulletin. When you show up at orientation, at least some of the colleges hand out lists of which courses satisfy any of that college’s reqs.

CAS has a 4 semester foreign language requirement. so unless you test out of it, you’ll have to start that at some point. You don’t have to take it your first semester, but you might as well start early and get it out of the way. And if you’ve been taking it in high school, you won’t want to forget everything you’ve learned.

Oh… I see. Do you know what the other side-requirements are for CAS? I tried looking for it on the BU website but I can’t find it - or I am not looking hard enough or navigating to the right pages.

[College of Arts & Sciences - BU 2008-09 Undergraduate Bulletin](http://www.bu.edu/bulletins/und/item12.html)

so wouldn’t it be bad for international students? cause they usually go to the last one

You’re still going to get all the classes you need…you just might not get the times or professors you want. It all evens out again second semester. So even if you’re stuck with an 8 am Spanish class for one semester…it’ll all be ok in the end. You’re not going to be behind on graduation requirements or anything.

I didn’t know this when I signed up for Orientation. I think I went to Session 7 out of 8, 8 being the International Student Orientation. Wasn’t pumped about waking up early 4 days out of the week, but still got in my Poli Sci 101 lecture. Still got in an intro Arabic class. Still got in my honors class. Basically the only issue was my Writing 100 class…I only had about 7 options for topics as opposed to the maybe 50 choices that the students who attended session 1 had.

BUBailey - what major are you and what track are you on?

Political Science, American Politics track
