So, which orientation will you or your student be attending this summer? DS will be attending the first Honors orientation June 11th and 12th, but will be arriving the day before because of cross country travel.

D’s orientation is June 22-23. It’s been a challenging effort to get one scheduled in the few options that the College of Ag has orientations that doesn’t conflict with MAJOR dates during her summer internship. Had one sched in July, then found out that she’ll be helping to plan and coordinate a state-wide conference on THE DAY she was supposed to be at UMD. Other option in July was when she’ll be in Washington, DC for a big leadership conference that is part of her internship.

When D called, they told her the only option was Aug 21, which is a registration-only session. (Less than one week before we’d be moving all her stuff up there and doing the 7-hr one way drive then…28 hrs of driving within one week? I don’t think so…). She was freaking out, and had 4 finals to study for. I was trying to assure her that she WOULD be able to register for classes, and MAY be able to get some class other than a 8:00 a.m. underwater basket-weaving class at the end of August!!! I had to hook on my helicopter mom rotors and start calling. It took several calls, emails, and controlled but sincere pleading, but she got into the June 22-23 sessions. Not an CP Scholars orientation, but it’s the only way we could make it work.

I wonder if many parents will be attending. I will not.

I will be going during the July 6/7 honors orientation. I would have liked to have gone to the June 11/12 orientation, but I graduate on the 11th and I’m pretty sure it’s not possible to be in two places that are 2600 miles apart at the same time.

July 17th and 18th. I kept forgetting to register.

My mom is going to parent orientation, but I don’t think she’s staying for the second day trip thing.

My daughter went to the first orientation 6/1-6/2. She couldn’t go to either of the 2 dates when the College of Education and College Park Scholars overlapped because of HS graduation and a planned overseas trip. The orientation office said it wasn’t really important to attend a on scholars-specific date (especially since she did attend an open house).

Both my wife and I attended the parent orientation and are glad we did. It’s hard to nail down any specific reason that it was so worthwhile, but there were several great speakers who put things in perspective everyone was great at answering parents’ questions and concerns.

sorry for this dumb question, but do they pair up random kids in dorms, or do the parents sleep in the dorms?

I’ve been to the June 01/02 orientation.
Kids are assigned randomly in dorms. I think all rooms were double.

freethinker, tell us about your orientation. What you did, what was good, any tips for students before they go?

Twilight,

Parents DO NOT stay in the dorms. They’re on their own to rent a hotel or whatever they like.

Freethinker,

How did registration go and how much time did your advisor take with you?

I know that is the time for us to take his medical insurance card, immunization, direct deposit information, confirm meal plan or change, confirm major or change.

My son is there now (June 4). He got paired with a random roommate. He’s hoping to find someone he clicks with to room with in the fall.

We got a VERY quick phone call this evening, so no details… I’ll post more after he gets home tomorrow.

ETA: We’re not doing the parent orientation. We live reasonably close, so I figure we’ll be around campus some anyway.

ginab - My daughter and I are going July 17 & 18. She is in Honors Humanities. She graduates on June 11th and will be overseas during the other July dates. I signed up for the 2nd day of orientation since we are coming from the west coast and I’d like a quick tour of DC. Where is your mom staying?

S is registered for 13-14 July orientation, DH and I are going up for the parents portion.

S2 is registered for the July 6-7 Honors orientation. W and I will be attending the parent orientation (thanks Terp80 for saying it’s worthwhile) even though we only live about 20 mins from campus, we have not been on campus very much. S1 had no interest in UMD and went OOS. So, we’re very interested to learn more about UMD!

@ jnrsmom- I actually have no idea. I don’t think she’s booked a place yet. Her sister lives right outside of DC on the Virginia side so she’ll probably spend the second day with her if she stays. We’ve been to DC many times and spend a lot of summers in the area so that’s why she opted out of the parent trip.

thanks to the people who answered my question, when i come back ill be sure to le everyone else in on the experience :)

I have orientation on June 25 and 26 (scholars orientation). Seemed like a good time to do it.

My son got done early today – he called at about 1 to say it was over, and fell asleep in the car on the way home. Apparently they stayed up late and got up early.

They grouped the kids by major. There were 9 in his group: computer science, math and physics majors. They traveled in that group, with a couple of sophomores leading them. He says he got a bunch of free T shirts, including one from the MD Book Exchange.

haha…by the end of her freshman year, D1 had amassed quite a collection of free t-shirts!!!

The groupings at orientation are (usually? ) by the college that houses your major. CMPS is the one Pax’s son was in. D is in the College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences (Environmental Science). It’s much smaller than some of the other colleges, so it only has about 4 or 5 possible orientation dates for the summer. It is good, because you’re grouped with people with similar interests. D1 had several friends (who also ended up in a couple of her classes) that she originally met at orientation.

So…if D is going to the last of the three Honors Humanities orientations, and there are only 50 kids in HH, AND most seem to be going to the first two, is it possible that there could be very few kids from HH on July 17-18?
