I've completed my UC application, and I'm working away at the UCLA film major supplementary application. However, they only accept about 30 people, so I want to take advantage of as many backup options as possible. I've heard good things about UCSB and I love the campus, so I am applying there. I am also applying to CSU Northridge and CSU Long Beach, but I would prefer to study at a UC.

I aim to someday be a screenwriter and showrunner for television.

Which other UCs would be worth applying to for my interests? (My UC gpa is 4.04 and my SAT score is 2240, so I believe that most UCs should be in my range.)

That school does sound rather nice, but I’d rather avoid doing the Common Application, especially at this point, when my school’s deadline for counseler letters of recommendation is now past. With two CSU applications and the UCLA supplemental app still needing completion by me, more work on top of that sounds, frankly, rather terrifying. I may apply if the counseler stuff is unnecessary, also assuming that I survive the end of the month, when my apps are due.

In addition, even if there is financial aid readily available, I’d rather stick to someplace a little more affordable for me, like a UC or CSU.

My parents are also recommending avoiding arts schools so that I have more options if my intetests change (which is unlikely, but not impossible), advice which seems logical to me.

I do appreciate the suggestion, though. Thank you.

Hi Cult,
Chapman is not an arts school. It is full university.
RE: affordability – my son was accepted at UCSB and the honors college at SDSU among others. And guess what – with merit aid, Chapman ended up being the most affordable of all of them. Yes, cheaper than even SDSU.

Chapman has a respectable film program. It not in the same league as USC, UCLA, NYU, or AFI, but it still has a good program. You should run a net price calculator to see how much it would cost over the others.

Well, this thread did get some responses, but I really would like to get responses as to what other UCs, specifically, would be worth sending my app to. My scores are good enough for most UCs, so I just would like to know which ones have film programs, preferably with screenwriting courses, that are actually worthwhile. I realize quite a few offer programs more based in analysis and media.

Are you transferring with junior status? Agree UCLA is long shot for everyone, so you need options. Wjth your SAT and GPA Chapman/LMU would throw you some significant money if you were incoming Freshman, but not sure as transfer and not sure you would be able to finish in two years. Keep in mind screenwriting is not dependent on film school degree for entry, but you need to write and have contacts, hence film school. The state schools you have are reasonable choices, probably your best in the state school system. Might try posting in film and arts section.

I am an incoming freshman, not a junior. As of this year, UCLA is offering a four-year film program.

The problem with schools like Chapman is that I haven’t done the Common App. My UC GPA is also higher than my ordinary weighted and unweighted GPAs.
