Just wondering what would be the best choice for plaza: DeNeve, Sunset Village, Hedrick Summit, or Rieber Vista? Also does DeNeve have the best location in terms of proximity to campus?

I was told last night by a mother whose son is in Sunset and whose good friend is in DeNeve that Sunset is quieter, while DeNeve has a more active (noisier?) social scene. Both boys loved their respective units and will be staying there again next year.

De Neve is closest to campus. Reiber Vista and Hedrick Summit are furthest away. i also heard that De Neve's dining hall has the best food out of the dining halls?

i hope i get De Neve :)

I stayed in DeNeve over summer for a program at UCLA and I thought the rooms were really nice! They SEEMED to be in a good location...but I didn't really get to see the other plazas so I wouldn't know. It felt just like a mini-hotel room and I liked the food at the cafeteria! =)
It's also a short distance from Ackerman Union, right?...

Yea VTECaddict...I really enjoyed the food! (as you can see in my above post)
I guess I don't have a clear picture though because there weren't as many students when we were there.

So is DeNeve better or Sunset? I'm leaning towards DeNeve but i just wanna make sure im making the right choice.

well, you cant even pick the specific plaza, so....?

Sunset is more quiet, De Neve is closer to campus. depends on what you prefer. theres no "best" one that will fit everyone.

De Neve is closer to south campus (science, math majors) as well as the center of campus (ackerman, wooden). Sunset is closer to north campus (humanities, social sciences majors). both are very close to campus (as is sproul res hall).

by the way, i dont think you can choose between sunset or de neve. they just place you in whichever plaza is available.

Do all the De Neve rooms have private bath (one per room) and Sunset have either private or shared by two rooms? I was thinking if someone wanted to be sure to get Sunset they could request the bathroom shared with two rooms since only Sunset has this. Right?

Do plazas have activities similar to what the halls have? So ppl could meet each other?

S lived in DeNeve his freshman year. He specifically requested it, and it cost more to live there. The dining hall was still being finished, so he didn't get to eat there that much. Each room (doubles) has its own bathroom that gets cleaned weekly. His room was at the end of the hall so, although it was quiet, he and his roommate had to seek out social interaction due to very little foot traffic.

In the plazas all the rooms had bathrooms to themselves. It feels totally like a hotel...I guess it might be a bit less "social" than a hall.

Little Mother...did you think (or did your son think) that the plaza was worth the extra money? What were the pros and cons?

Do the plazas have "access control" like the res halls do?

I read that last year, 2 athletes were held up at gunpoint inside the suites...

acacia--S did like living in DeNeve because it was new, it was relatively close to campus, and it had a semi-private bathroom that came with maid service. He didn't like DeNeve at the time because the dining hall wasn't open, his room was off the beaten path so there wasn't much social interaction, and he didn't find the dorm as social as some of the other ones. He would recommend not necessarily spending the extra money unless you want a private bathroom.

passerby--DeNeve has access control. I couldn't get in to leave a note for my S until a student came by.

you cant choose what unit you want

on the housing form, you just choose "residence halls," "plazas," or "suites" and then if you get your first choice, then just just randomly assign you to whatever unit is available

thanks little mother.

i prefer plazas to halls because of the AC and priv. bathroom.

Thanks for the info little mother!

Someone told me that if I want to meet a lot of new people I should try a hall. Oh well...I would have a whole year to decide ..and that's IF I get into LA prays =)

acacia,

your name is the name of one of the de neve halls!

AH! are you serious? It's a sign! Of course it must be because they're all like birch and oak and all these tree names. Hmm...I can't remember which one I stayed in but I can tell you the EXACT location of it...=)

do we get to choose?
