Which Pretty Good Colleges Are You NOT Considering?

That’s interesting to me, because I thought their recent road show at a large regional information session was outstanding, but I remember back when I was in high school that I just didn’t “click” with the MIT interviewer.

The Yale Zeta Psi people pictured in that article are dangerous to society.

I made my first extended visit to MIT over this past weekend, but I didn’t see any official presentations by the admission office there. Now my son has seen colleges on both coasts and in some places in between and has more points of comparison to think about as he refines his application list.

schools that aren’t on the west coast (i’m from the north east).

i’ve been to california in particular and liked it, and the great schools out there really enticed me. it’s funny, because had i not spent time in CA, i’m pretty sure that my entire list would be revamped and limited to the east coast.

BU and NYU–if I’m in a city, I need a campus.
HYP–not the right feel–I probably wouldn’t get in anyway, but I wouldn’t apply even if I could.

Probably Duke and Emory–they seem like great schools and good fits for me, but the social scene isn’t what I’m looking for and I don’t do too well when it gets HOT.

Technical institutions-- I don’t like science and math enough to want to go somewhere where those are the larger focus. I will probably major in History or English, so it just isn’t what I’m looking for.

I’m also tentative (although still considering) about all-girls schools. As someone else said, I think it would just be “too many girls.” I like having guys around, although I’m not always very good at talking to them. ;)

Stanford-I used to like the idea of it, but I’m pretty settled on Midwest or East Coast (at least I am this week).
Princeton-Visited. Turned off by it. Great school, but I wasn’t feeling it. Don’t really know why.

My D seems to be rejecting any school recommended by a relative because she wants to have “her own experience.”

Although bombarded with admissions literature from Duke she found the admissions officer at the “Exploring College Options” session incredibly arrogant and that was that.(I didn’t think she was that bad and suspect my D was partially projecting her dislike of a family friend who is a Duke alum on the Duke rep). Liked the Harvard rep very much but decided after second visit that she would wait until grad/med school to live in a large city. Visited Wesleyan, loved it and decided to focus her search on the LACs.

Tufts - we visited, and DS didn’t like the “feel” of the campus. Too artsy, I think. Also, DS didn’t like all the hills and steps on campus.

Wake Forrest - campus didn’t have the right feel for him. Couldn’t pin point what the problem was.

Kenyon - Nice campus, good feel, but DS didn’t fit in with the students. Felt the students didn’t have a grip on the real world.

Princeton - the concept of “eating clubs” turned him off, even though we don’t know much about them.

Northwestern - we attended an info session in our city, and DS felt the school had nothing special to offer him. Sad for me because this is where I wanted him to go.

I think I said Princeton already, but I still hate it so it should be mentioned again :D

Basically all the Ivies. The only ones that offer my major are Brown (don’t like the campus) and UPenn (don’t like the city). Cornell (cold, middle of nowhere), Dartmouth (middle of nowhere), Yale (don’t like the student body - didn’t visit, this is just what I’ve heard from past/current students; not a fan of New Haven either) and Columbia (core). I would apply to Harvard and Princeton if I thought I had a chance/wanted to die.

However, I do want to get into Princeton’s Woodrow Wilson School. If only …

Others are Cal (actually, my father banned me from applying, which I’m not too upset about since I didn’t care for it), UCLA (rotten egg-smelling smog, rush hour 24/7, BelAir and that stupid red light that stays on for ten minutes, etc.) and midwest schools like UWash.

U of Chicago. I fell in love with it so it was kind of a hard decision for me not to apply, but it’s a super reach who’s pricetag and financial aid (heard a lot of stories of it being horrible for people in similar situations as me) just won’t work for me. At least for my other super reach, I may hold a puny chance of acceptance due to the unique school I’m applying to.

Carnegie Mellon, UPenn, and Lehigh…

I have this thing against Pennsylvania. Don’t ask.

Oh. And Stanford. I didn’t like the feel of the campus- too California “surfer” and the general feel of Palo Alto wasn’t quite right…

I wouldn’t apply to Dartmouth, Harvard, Princeton, Skidmore (if that is included as being good.)

I’ll revive this thread to find out what the new participants from high school class of 2009 think about this issue.

Nowhere in california. Too liberal, visited San Fransico and was glad when I left.

My list is fairly long. However, I’m definitely not considering any schools in the South, Southwest, Great Plains region, or a rural locale, nor any Ivy League school, Stanford, or UChicago (yes, I’m fairly picky).

HYPSMCCaltech

“The Yale Zeta Psi people pictured in that article are dangerous to society.”

Dangerous? They’re fratboys, for goodness sake! Of course it’s tasteless, but there’s nothing dangerous about their antics. Further, I might add, that although I’m not personally acquainted with any of these certain ladies at Yale, I’m sure they do exist (as anywhere else) and that these crass fratboys enjoy them (and their myriad of diseases) greatly.

To be honest, I’m not really considering anything in California. Too.. always seventy-five degrees. Also, not a lot of… complete middle-of-nowhere schools.

I didn’t like Villanova when I visited - the rep mostly talked about the reputation of the school and didn’t make it memorable at all. No materials, nothing. All I remember is him falling down during the tour.
