I cant decide who to choose to tutor me for the ACT. Obviously there are local people, but idk how experienced they are. And then there was one guy that tutors online vis Skype and sends pdf with homework and practice. But has anyone done a tutor like this and was it very helpful and successful? He seems very experienced. Anf lastly, there are the super expensive private tutors from companies like studypoint anf varsity tutors as well as Princeton review. While they offer a guarantee of improvement, idk if its worth the money...

Any help or want to share your experience/opinions?:)

You could probably get a decent tutor via skype for less than 15/Hr. It all depends on how much improvement you’ll need etc.

Anyone else have an opinion or expirience?

i need help with my math!!! CAN ANYONE HELP ME

My friend got a Sylvan tutor for a few weeks, but I’ve never had a tutor. She improved just as much as I did (my scores are way higher than hers, but we had the same amount of increased points).

I asked her if she thought it was worth it and she said yes. Not sure if this helps. :/

I have a friend who used Kaplan and there scores went from a 22 to 28 in a month but they complained about the out of session work.

If you do decide to get a tutor, and you have to make a choice between someone local and a live online tutor (such as via Skype) I would recommend going with the better tutor.

Ideally you want to make sure the tutor has good credentials, at least several years of ACT prep experience, and has actually been successful in raising students’ scores.

Best of luck!

I tutor professionally. You may prefer having someone physically present during the tutoring, but I’ve tutored via Skype with success. Experience is a must. I’d also recommend going with someone who has a ton of official materials. For instance, I have over 30 official ACT exams that I work through with students. Many of my students previously worked with another tutor who used the red book and that was it. Especially with science, official is key.

I wouldn’t waste your time on someone who is advertising for $15/hr. Experienced tutors most likely won’t be working for that amount. Ideally, you want a private tutor who comes highly recommended. I’ve heard positive and negative stories from big name test prep companies. No matter what, large increases are seen by students who put in the most work outside of sessions.
