Hi all, HS senior deciding between two undergrad business programs.

Program #1 is ranked very highly on US News and is a much bigger name school

Program #2 is ranked pretty poorly on US News but is very comparable to program #1 on Businessweek rankings (1 spot behind)

For specifically undergraduate business, does anyone have any idea which ranking is more accurate? In terms of overall rankings for the school, one is a national university while the other is a masters university so they are difficult to compare in that regard. I intend on attending a business school for a masters degree, which is why I am concerned that the lesser known program #2 might limit my options.

MBA admission is much more about your work experience (for a good program this would be a bare minimum of two years, five is preferable) than it is about the name on your diploma. Good grades are important along with good letters of reference from your work supervisors and old professors, and good GMAT score.

Pick up the phone and call Program #2. It sounds like you are leaning that way right now. Ask them about the things that interest you.

P.S. All ranking systems are primarily smoke and mirrors. Don’t take any of them too seriously.

Thanks for the reply. I haven’t been to both yet to see which I which I like better but I was leaning towards #2 because it will be essentially free, while #1’s FA award hasn’t come out yet. I want to try to get into business school for sure so I guess going in without debt or any spending will outweigh prestige or whatever if admission is based mostly on the criteria you mentioned.

Of course USNWR is more correct. Reading business news often and having been on CC, I can tell you Businessweek’s ranking is way off. Nobody talks about many of the colleges on their list.
