I’m entering Umass in Spring 2016 and I wanted to know which Resident Hall would be the best choice for my Education Major when it comes to distance from classes dinning halls.
Also I’ve read a bunch of threads saying that certain Residential Areas are prone to be more noisy than others. Is this true? I would like a quiet dorm and not one that has parties all day.
In Massachusetts, there is no such thing as an “education major”. To be licensed as a teacher you need an academic major (English, Bio, math, etc). Even elementary school teachers need an academic area (most do English I would guess). Would be easier to answer if we knew what you want to teach. Generally the quieter areas are Northeast and Orchard Hill. If you want quiet avoid Southwest like the plague. North Res. area are all upperclassmen apartments.
Northeast is close to Worcester Dining, O-Hill is close to both Worcester and Franklin Dining.
@MADad I want to become a History Teacher. So Orchard and Northeast are both quiet? Is Central the same as Southwest? And is the hill in Orchard really as treacherous as people make it out to be?
Central has a laid back reputation in that it supposedly attracts the “cannabis crowd”. S’s friend is not the stoner type but lived there for 2 yrs in Central (engineer). Nothing is like Southwest–though some say that the low rise bldgs. are not as bad as the towers.
Northeast is closest to the science and engineering areas–does not apply to OP.
I live in OHill and the hill is not that bad. You honestly get used to it after the first couple weeks. Winter makes it a little tougher but you can always take the bus up and down or car if you’re bringing one. So if you don’t mind the hill, then Ohill isn’t a bad choice. The dorms are really nice and same with the area. And Ohill being quiet? I haven’t found it to be quiet. People are always socializing in the halls and the lounges and people hang out in the bowl area and play sports.
Central is fun! I lived there last year and never had an issue with people pressuring me to smoke or anything-most freshman live in Gorman, O-Hill, or Wheeler. Gor dorm is the best place ever.
@achap123 Yea that’s seems alright. I am leaning towards O-Hill but my only concern would be getting to my classes. And by loud I meant like always playing loud music/video games and parties like in Southwest where I wouldn’t be able to study. socializing in the dorms is fine by me.
@dessie411 Isn’t Central Closer to engineering/math classes? I’m just looking for a dorm that won’t put me too far away from where I want to go.
O-Hill is pretty out of the way from everything. Assuming you haven’t gotten a schedule yet, you’ll probably be taking a bunch of pre-reqs, which will be all over the place. Just pick the area that you like the best.
The general reputations of the dorms:
Southwest-Party all day, every day. It gets wild down there.
Central-Lot of pot, but I didn’t see this at all when I was living there. It’s right next to Frank, which makes it really convient-it’s about a ten minute walk to the library, and twenty to get into Amherst Center.
O-Hill-Former honors dorms. It’s nice, but that hill is a force.
Northeast-Mostly engineers, but there are a few nurses in there too.
@dessie411 yea I wanted to join a RAP but its only for first semester freshman students. But I think I’ll go for O-Hill, I’ll just by climbing boots for the winter lol. Thanks for your help
