I plan to take two SAT II subject tests in October, this is the last chance I have to take subject tests before I apply ED or EA to Swarthmore. I know for sure I want to take United States History since I took AP.US last year and feel highly confident in my abilities. However, I can't decide between Math II or Literature. I know that taking Math would make my application look more well rounded, but I'm pretty sure that I would do better on the Literature test. I don't plan on becoming an engineering major so its not a requirement that I take Math II. What do you think I should do?

Why not go ahead and take 3 tests and see how you do. Some schools are still requiring 3 anyway. If your ED/EA doesn't work out and/or you find a different school which interests you, you will be covered. Otherwise, Swat can look at your 2 highest scores.

swarthmore has EA?

Ok, yeah I guess it would be best to just take 3. Yeah Swat. doesn't have EA, oh well I still plan to apply ED.

Wow you must be really committed to Swarthmore to go ED. Anyways, I would do 3 SAT II's, definitely looks better than 2. You should have taken US History SAT II in May or June when it was still fresh in your mind.

SAT II Russian
SAT II Kalisdms
SAT II smsms

actually i'm kinda againt taking 3 .. (i mean.. i wouldnt do that -0-;;)

colleges now want only 2 SAT2s cuz SAT1 contains old-SAT2 Writing. i dont think they will necessarily give you an advantage only because you have 3 instead of 2. (of course if you have all 3 over 700 or something that's a different story)

either way, take practice tests on each subject and see how kinda score range you can get. and also take a look at SAT 2 Math Ic .. that would be easier for you.

Yeah I looked at Swarthmore Admissions and they only require you to take two SAT IIs if you took the New SAT with the writing section. Yeah I definately wish that I had had the opportunity to take The U.S. SAT II in June, but I took the Reasoning test on that date. I would feel alot better about taking Math IC, but I've already completed Gifted/Honors Analysis and they recommend taking Math IIC if you've taken a math course at that level. I don't want to look like I'm taking the easy way out by taking Math IC. Are they the same difficulty and just cover different areas in math or is Math IC truly easier than Math IIC? If I do take 3 SATs most likely Lit., U.S., and Math IIC since Swat only requires 2 will they only look at my two highest?

Yes I'm very committed to Swarthmore. Hopefully they'll see that as well.

who are 'they'?? if 'they' are your high school teachers and counselors, just go ahead and take Ic. IF they are Swarthmore admin, maybe think more about IIc (i mean you need think about time you gonna spend on IIc and lit. you might want to concentrate on one subject and ace it)

depend on colleges.. some really look at only what they required. or some look mainly at what they required, and perhaps give a little edge for others

i think solid 2 SAT 2 scores would be better than 3 medicore SAT2 scores .. (kinda common sense i guess)

go to www.subject-tests.com for a complete list of what every college is requiring or recommending. duh is mostly correct, but there are still some colleges that require or recommend three Subject Tests despite the addition of Writing to the SAT. momofwildchild has it right. There is little-to-no downside to taking 3. It would be rather harsh for a college that only requires 2 to look negatively upon you for a lower score on a third Subject Test that they didn't even require in the first place.

The bottom line on the Math 1 vs. Math 2 issue is that you should take the one on which you'll score higher. This is easily determined by taking the practice tests in the Real SAT II's book by the College Board. I bet you'll find that you score as high or higher on the Math 2, not only because you're coming out of Honors Math Analysis but also because the Math 2 is scaled far more generously. If my bet is wrong, then take the Math 1. A higher Math 1 score is better than a lower Math 2 score, even if some colleges perhaps do regard the Math 2 a bit more highly. Of course you have to make sure that none of your colleges require the Math 2, but these are few and far between. Check the detailed descriptions at www.subject-tests.com. Other than Stanford (M2 recommended, not required) and some other school's hard-core engineering programs, Math 1 is still OK. Of course the UC's don't accept Math 1, but they don't require a math subject test at all.

Good luck with Swarthmore. It's a great school.

Ok, thankyou all so much for the advice. I'll buy the Real SAT II book for Math and take practice tests to decide which math I'll take.

OH, they = collegeboard.com " Mathematics Level 2 is a broad survey test intended for students who have taken college-prep math for more than three years: two years of algebra, one year of geometry, and elementary functions (precalculus) and/or trigonometry."
