Which school has better reputation nationally? TCU or Stony Brook University?

I have to say, I have a generally positive impression of the academics at Stony Brook and a neutral impression of the academics at TCU. No great familiarity with either school.

Never heard of Stony Brook before joining CC. Know the TCU name only thru sports and don’t associate it with much of anything.

Stony Brook is pretty well known in NJ (only one state away from NY), especially for engineering. I’ve got several colleagues who went to school there, for undergrad or grad school.

I get the impression that TCU’s national reputation hinges on whether one follows NCAA sports or not. If someone does, it’s recognizable. If they don’t, it’s like “Huh?”

Is it really that big of a deal that TCU has joined the Big East?

Actually the Christian part of the TCU name might make me idly wonder if the person was a God-squadder (eg a proselytizer)

Let’s ask Sammy Baugh for his opinion.

^ Well done.

My son is a senior at TCU. We have been very pleased with the level of academics. The school has a beautiful campus and is big enough and yet not too big. My son lived on campus for three years and is now living off campus. We are from the East coast not from Texas.
The Christian in the name is a nod to the founders of the school and it is still currently associated with the Christian Church (Discples of Christ) but this is by no means a Christian only school. The campus is not as diverse as one would like, but I think they are working on that (What school isn’t!) My son is working on a double major, Creative Writing and music.
He’s had great opportunities within the school with his music as well as in the Fort Worth community.
Overall, it’s been great. I would highly recommend this school.

Yes I agree with Erin’s Dad about joining the Big East. Plus TCU went up on the Business Week Top School’s list and their Neely School of Business is now #30 in the country.

bump…
