Which school is better for French and Linguistics studies UCLA or Berkeley? I got admitted to both but not sure I want to move to Berkeley cause I live in LA for 7 years now and I heard that actually the department is better in LA. Will Berkeley be a better choice? does anyone have an idea?

I am majoring in Spanish and Linguistics and will be transferring to UCLA this fall. I have heard nothing but great things about their language departments as a whole, and something that definitely swayed me (granted, this is Spanish, but still says a lot) was a story my previous Spanish teacher told me about her choosing to PAY to go to UCLA over a free ride to USC, because the school is that amazing. Oh, and she is from Costa Rica…so basically, denied a free ride to a great private school and of all the public universities in California chose LA for their renown laguage dept. Just sayin’…

Obviously you will get a great education at both schools…that’s just my two cents.

Also, have you checked out the department pages online for UCLA? Maybe that will help you a bit with your decision.

Good luck! :]

I think that UCLA’s linguistics program is somewhat stronger than Berkeley’s, while the latter’s French department is superior to UCLA’s. But really, there doesn’t appear to be much difference between the two, especially for undergrad. I took one German class at UCLA and I’m currently enrolled in a German class in a community college. I can tell you from experience that the class at UCLA progressed very rapidly and we covered an incredible amount of ground in just 10 weeks. I imagine that the same must be true at Berkeley, albeit a bit slower since it runs on the semester system.

Sorry to invade this thread, but I have a sort of on-topic question. Are any of the French professors actually French?
