Which school is better for pre-med.

Hello,
I was just wondering if anybody could help me in making my decision for school. I want to go to med school and the schools I have been accepted to are the ones who give me a better shot of getting in. The University of Arkansas and the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Which school would give me better oppertunities including research and extracurriculars that could make me a more competitive applicant?

Those are both the state flagships, right? Total toss-up. Both will provide you with the opportunities needed.

UAB is not a flagship. The flagship is University of Alabama…and it’s in Tuscaloosa.

However, UAB is where the med school is…at it’s highly ranked. UAB will do an excellent job for a premed student.

Are you instate for either school? Are you in honors? Were you given scholarships?

Flagship or not and having Med. School or not at specific school did not affect my D’s application to Med. School. That is all I can say based on her experience. Having said that, opportunities to excell as well as for great Medically related ECs are absolutely everywhere, including lowest ranked public state schools that do not have Medical Schools. It is up to a student to pursue these opportunities or let them pass by (this is straight from the mouth of my D. who is currently MS2 - second year medical student), who believes that she went to the UG that matched her personality and wide range of interest the best and who also believes that the best possible match is the key to success in UG and nothing else.

^^^

I agree. And, MiamiU is a long-established school (est. 1809!!) with a full college experience, so it has many of the attributes of a flagship U.

That can’t always be said for other non-flagship schools. I don’t know what this student wants out of college, but there would be a big difference (outside of academics) between UAB and UArk.

Also, much might depend on cost. If this student has rec’d a good bit of merit at one of these schools, that can make a huge difference.

^Agree, cost is definitely a huge factor when planning for Med. School. Cutting cost in UG opens more opportunities choosing Med. School.

wall2… my S attends uab…feel free to ask any questions. Son has been doing research since his first semester of freshman year. in some great labs. loves the professors he works with, and that teach his classes. Professors are very accessible and want students to succeed. 7 hospitals surround the school so there are also incredible opportunities for shadowing and volunteering. Have you applied to an honors college at uab…sci/tech is excellent if you have a research focus.
