My D was recently admitted to both UT Austin Studio Art and VCU art foundations.
When applying she intended to major in Art Ed but has changed her mind and wants to earn a degree that will help her towards applying to a university that has a masters in Medical Illustration (Johns Hopkins University).

Which school is better? she has in-state tuition for both.

Hey, great news on the ‘yes’ letters from VCU and Texas. I could argue equally for both of these schools (Texas = art AND biology classes, VCU = wider and deeper art education) but I don’t think it would help much. I would call Hopkins grad admissions and ask them the same question. Your real question seems to be which undergrad education will position her for a masters in medical illustration. I’d go to the source - JHU.

I ended up emailing JHU Medical Illustration admissions recently and they were very helpful with lots of info and guidance.
My d also was admitted to Arcadia University which offers a BA in Scientific Pre-Med Illustration.
I asked JHU about the 3 schools and they could not say one was better than the other but did say a few things about each one.
I also got helpful info from UT art department and they offer a double major BA in Studio Art and Natrual Sciences.

From what I’ve gathered I believe that she will choose NOT to attend UT-Austin. This is something that was difficult and confusing for her father to hear of course. She has said it is not at the top of her list because it’s not the type of Art instruction she would like.

Arcadia University is a nice school and we toured it twice. We have lots of good things to say about it but in the end I think she will choose VCU.
The degree at VCU is called
BFA in Communication Arts - Scientific and Preparatory Medical Illustration

From her father’s view I think he could not understand that she would choose VCU over UT and that’s why it’s so important that we do all of the research on each school.
The school should be the right fit for her, have the right program or major, and she should be happy and excited.
It’s been an emotional tug-o-war but I believe things are better and clearer now for everyone.

The final decision ended up being UT-Austin after her father flew her there on 2 separate occasions. 1 was a private interview and department tour, the other was an invitation department VIP day. They even toured the city and did some fun things, even a UT-Baylor Bball game. Her grandparents live in Texas and are very happy about her choice since they have missed many years of her growing up.
She is still set on the double major studio art/ natural science and still plans on making sure she has the right classes to apply to JHU.
