Since Rice asks for you to select an area of study, do certain individuals who apply to a specific school have a disadvantage? If so, which school(s)?

No, not really. It really only matters for architecture and music. Otherwise, it's mainly useful for them to put you with an academic advisor if you do come to Rice, and to see if your scores/abilities are vaguely in line with your possible interests (i.e. it may be harder for a person with a high math score and low verbal score to get in if they indicate that they absolutely want to be an English major).

Well, I was thinking of applying to transfer, double majoring in CAAM and mathematical economics. Which school should I apply to? Does it make a difference?

Not really since you will probably be very specific when you answer why (you already have two majors in mind). Just pick the school of whichever is more appealing to you. If they are about the same, put social science for math-econ (not because it is easier, but because I think more people are in engineering so they stand out less).
