I’m a senior in high school from PA. I would like advice on which of the following schools would be preferred for pre vet studies. I plan to major in bio and I’m most concerned about grade deflation (good gpa is obviously necessary) and vet intern experience opportunities. Price isn’t a big factor, because I want to be happy at the school I attend. I’m applying to the following schools:
UVA
UNC
Penn State
U of Pittsburgh
VA Tech
UMD
Villanova
U of Florida
Cornell
I’m not expecting to get into all of these schools, but I’m just hoping for some advice to put my mind at ease. Thanks!
I lived in VA and have a friend who was seriously considering Virginia Tech for pre-vet. She ultimately didn’t end up going for personal reasons, but I have heard nothing but good things about the VT veterinary program- people from Northern VA bring their pets there for surgeries and such because it’s lower cost and has a great reputation. I’d strongly recommend looking into the program and applying if it fits your needs.
UVA is a better-ranked school overall, but they’re not known for pre-vet/veterinary medicine. Might be a good option, but maybe not as good as Tech.
Clemson also has a good program
Does anyone have input on UNC CH or Davidson? I’d prefer to go south for college.
Thanks for the advice previously given, VA tech is a serious contender.
My D is a freshman in VT’s pre-vet (called animal science there) and loves it. It is closely aligned with biology (see DaVinchi Learning Community). We looked at several schools before she chose VT. I’d recommend looking at the classes different schools offer and what animals the program focusses on, especially if you want an internship. I’d also consider how far away the animal facilities are from the main campus too. For example, at NC State the Vet school and animal facilities is a 15 minute drive from the main campus. Clemson’s horse facility was a 15 min drive as well. VT’s Vet School is at the edge of campus and their barns are within bike riding. This is especially important if you don’t have a car.
