Which school should I apply to by Early Action?

Or maybe some tips for things I can do to increase my chances?..so far, I’ve only done things I enjoy to participate in / have focused on activities that are related to what I plan to study in college.

The chance for Harvard this year will be under 6%. As mentioned, unless you are legacy, an athlete or URM, your chances are about the same as everyone else at around 6%. Write great essays, make sure you find the right people to give you recommendations. You have way too many ECs and probably not enough space on commonapp. Find things to highlight more and probably cut out some.

Any other advice?

Thank you, by the way. I will definitely consider the advice.

buuuuumppppp

Now I am mainly considering Harvard for SCEA and the others for RD. Any opinions??

You need to cut down on your resume. Honestly, it is a little ridiculous. “Chairperson for my school’s Pi Day celebration”? “State representative at the National Leadership Conference at Orlando, Florida” - unless I’m mistaken, that is something you pay for, and it’s not very prestigious at all. First chair for SECOND violins - sounding a little desperate there. West Valley Middle School Math Award…they do not want to see middle school awards on your application. I don’t know what the President’s Education Awards Program: Outstanding Academic Excellence but it also sounds like a filler award. I don’t know how you can possibly be president/founder of so many things. If you are honestly devoting a good amount of time to each one and truly leading, props to you because I guess you’ve figured out a way to add hours to the day. You’ve got impressive stats, just cut out the BS.

ima have to agree with taft10. ■■■■■. i actually started chuckling at a few things.

Thank you for your opinions.

Ooops! I copied and pasted this from my resume that I’ve simply been updating overtime, so I forgot to cut out the 8th grade stuff. and no, nothing I mentioned is achieved through “paying for it.” As for the chairperson of pi day- only 3 people were selected to be chairpersons. This position can only be achieved if you are an officer of Mu Alpha Theta(math club) and are appointed by the sponsor of Mu Alpha Theta. While the rest of the school spends times in activities that are set up in different classrooms, the chairpersons are in charge of checking the volunteers in and out of their assigned events and making sure everything runs smoothly. Also, I was involved in planning some of the acitivites prior to “Pi Day.” Is there any other way I should mention this leadership position to better reflect the duties and not sounds “silly?” Also, the “State representative at the National Leadership Conference at Orlando, Florida”- this is for HOSA(health occupation students of america), which is a contest. I placed in the top 3 at the state level and, thus, advanced to nationals (where I placed 2nd), which is called the HOSA National Leadership Conference. Is that not worth mentioning? Perhaps I should be more specific when writing that on my resume.

And yes, I truly did take up too many activities; nonetheless, I have followed through with each and every leadership position and have been involved with all my clubs whether through competitions or volunteer work (yes, I have been VERY sleep-deprived for the past few semesters, but I think it’s worth it! ) My extracurriculars are mainly volunteering clubs, science/math clubs, and cultural clubs. I plan to major in a science and minor in international studies, so isn’t this a satisfactory route for EC’s?

Academically you seem qualified for the Ivy schools. In my opinion you should apply to Yale Early Decision because I think if you get in, you can still apply to other colleges. When you apply to Yale make sure you get an interview so they know you are serious. GOOD LUCK!!

Harvard has reinstated its Single-Choice early action(not Early Decision, in which case you are committed to attending that school), which is the same early action plan as the one that Yale offers. I was originally going to apply to Yale early, but looking at the actual results thread, it looks like it is much more difficult to get in than harvard. I realize the posted stats are from a very small proportion of the total applicant population, but just by comparing, I don’t seem to stand a chance. I will still apply to yale through RD though! :)

Also, Sci Bowl & Sci Olymp branch off of Sci club, so that would all categorize as one club. How does this look as a new list of EC’s?

-Health Occupation Students of America (placed at regionals, state, nationals)

  • National Junior Honors Society/National Honors Society(volunteered a lot & Vice president)
  • Mu Alpha Theta/math honors society (competitions & Secretary & president)
  • Science Club/Science Bowl/Science Olympiad (placed at regionals and state for Olymp(overall 2nd in region); 3rd in state for Bowl)
  • Student Government Association (Representative since junior year. senior class president)
  • Spanish Club/ Spanish Honors society (volunteered)
-FANS(served as mentor for incoming freshman since sophomore year)
  • [ethnicity] Cultural Association, 2006 (The University chapter. Involved with cultural celebrations at two universities)
  • Research intern at the University
  • Hand-In-Hand: summer camp for those interested in learning about different ethnicities, 2011(co-founder & camp counselor)
  • Current Member of the following academic societies: Science Academy, Mathematics Academy, and World Languages Academy (fulfilled all academic requirements)
  • Orchestra- Four years
  • Sports: Dance, Gymnastics, and Tennis(not too involved, though. Played on and off…unfortunately :frowning: sigh* )

Hopefully that gives everyone a better idea of my level of participation in each activity :D

How’s Harvard looking as of now?

Buuuuuuuuuuuuump
