Ok, so I'm a sociology major whose transferring from a CC this fall. I was wondering which school would be best for me: UCLA, Michigan, UCSD, or UT Austin? (I already got into Michigan and I'm kinda leaning towards going there).

Thanks!

Well, I think that you should be the individual that decides where you opt to go. What do you find preferable at each school?

Are you in-state for any of these schools? Is money a concern?

The out of state costs for these schools are very high.

Wartsandall- Well, obviously academics is important, but I think nightlife and the surrounding area around a given campus is really important too. You gotta have fun while you’re a college too. The thing is that I feel like Berkeley doesn’t fit my personality too well (it reminds me too much of my high school).

Mom2collegekids- I live in California, but money isn’t really an issue.

:) Well, since you can afford the $50k per year for UMich and you’ve been accepted, sounds good!

Does UT-Austin accept many OOS transfer students?

Not really (at least from what I can see). They seem to really be preferential towards in state students.

Go with Michigan - they have an outstanding program in the social sciences. Some of my best students have come from that school. UT should be your second choice.

Go to UCLA. Money may not “be an issue”, but Michigan isn’t worth that much more money. UCLA and UCSD are just as good as UT and Michigan, and you’d really just be wasting money not to go to one of them. UCLA is better for sociology, so I’d go there.

I have to ask, though, why not Berkeley? US News ranks it number one for sociology.

You obviously want a different experience, that’s probably why you are applying for top OOS public schools. Coming from California, UT-Austin would be a better choice. I went to school at UT-Austin, but lived in Ann Arbor. It is difficult to adjust to the cold and gloominess of Michigan. While Michigan is beautiful during the summer, most of the academic year will be in the fall, winter, and spring. Michigan is especially gloomy because of the lake-effect clouds. You probably will only a handful of sunny days. However, UT-Austin is extremely competitive for OOS students. But if you do get in, you should go there.

I’ll take the cold and gloominess of Michigan over the humidity of Texas anytime. But that’s a personal preference the OP has to decide. The four distinct seasons of Michigan (though spring and fall are relatively short) are a pleasant change for many from California. If nightlife is important, then big cities like L.A. or Austin are probably the top choices. Why not visit all those campuses if money is not an issue?

Academically, they’re all great in sociology:

3 Berkeley

4 Michigan

5 UCLA

16 Texas

22 UCSD

These are graduate rankings, but undergraduate should be similar.

All are great school and although with money not being a issue Michigan would be a great choice though being a resident of California it may be good for you to keep options of schools in California and Texas open. Also if you plan to attend graduate school you may want to compare the cost of each school, and since it seems like you have so much money to go around why not plan a visit to Michigan and other universities you may get accepted into as this may help.
