Which school should i go to?

I'm interested in I-banking, but also other finance-related jobs.
I would appreciate it if you ranked these schools for I-banking AND finance in general.
When ranking, I'm primarily concerned about recruiting/getting a job after graduating.

NYU (CAS through LSP..basically i can't transfer into Stern)- Economics
U. of Notre Dame (Mendoza once I'm a sophomore)- Finance/Economics
U. of Michigan (LSA, and applying to Ross sophomore year through regular admissions)- Economics

Here's what I'm thinking/wondering:
I know Stern is respected...Have no idea how NYU-Economics is perceived...I hear Mendoza is a good business school, but not really targeted for finance-related fields...I know Ross is good, but Mendoza is guaranteed after freshman year, while Ross is not guaranteed.

A few questions:
1. What degree would be more beneficial, economics or finance? (though i hope to double major or minor in one of them)
2. Which school would be best to transfer out of...and into a more targeted business school (assuming i would achieve the same gpa)?

Thanks

Not sure how non-Stern NYU students fair during recruiting season, but if you end up not being able to transfer into Ross at Michigan and you don’t have anything special on your resume, you are going to have a very hard time getting banks to notice you come recruiting season. If it’s the same deal at NYU, I would probably opt for ND (although, as you said, I’m not sure how targeted Mendoza is).

i see…i was wondering too, which degree would be more useful…economics or finance?

If you don’t have a preference, all else equal, I recommend studying economics. It would be useful to take an introductory finance course to grasp the basics for interviews, however.

so would an economics degree be equal whether it be from NYU or UMICH?
would a finance or economics degree from Notre Dame be better than the econ. degree from NYU or UMICH?

I think that’s the final question I have. if an economics degree from UMICH would be equivalent to the other two’s, it seems as though UMICH should be the top choice sicne there’s the option of Ross.

Don’t know anything about NYU Econ other than it’s tied with UM for 12 in the graduate school economics USNews rankings.

Not if 1) You don’t get into Ross and 2) Mendoza has decent recruiting and 3) You are set on finance. My gut tells me Mendoza will give you better placement opportunities than UM Econ.

hmm…the acceptance rate of the 2009 class for regular admission to Ross was 42% witha n average GPA of around 3.6…i think i can pull that off…and i’ll probably apply to some other business schools at the same time…

but here’s what i think you’re saying…

UM Ross > ND Mendoza > NYU/UM Econ

thanks for all the help Giants

Yes, those rankings seems accurate. Just so you know, it’s not all about GPA when you’re applying to Ross freshman year. Got to have 2-3 solid extracurriculars. I know people who have been rejected with 3.9+ b/c they were too one-dimensional.

hmm well i play three sports…but no where near college d1 level…i love community service so i think that could be one of them…and i could join a few clubs…though i know depth>quantity

would you recommend any particular extracurriculars?

^Just get involved with whatever interests you. Just make sure you have a decent influence on the activity you do – i.e. don’t just sign up for a club and be passive about it. Get involved to the degree where you can write interesting stuff in your essays.

does my essay for Ross have to be about extracurriculars?
hmm i should probably find the questions first, but is it a must or something?

ND does not take transfers for their Mendoza School of Business. You would have to study Economics.

The school I will be attending is DePaul. 40th ranked ugrad business program with some good recruiting ties (at least from what I read). Some notable companies: Merrill Lynch, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, JP Morgan Chase, Bank of America, Credit-Suisse, and the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago.

[ACADEMICS: Who Hires DePaul Grads?](http://www.depaul.edu/academics/success_after_depaul/who_hires/index.asp)

^What exactly is your point?

There are multiple essays. I didn’t actually apply, but I’m certain that you need to illustrate extracurricular involvement in your application.

Just a suggestion if he isn’t able to earn admission into the schools he listed.
