Which school to go ? UIUC OR WISCONSIN

Which school should i go?
UIUC OR WISCONSIN?
I am planning to major in social studies, but i might change it to business.
coast is not a big factor as i am an international student.

Both are very similar in the ranking and there is very little there to separate the two. I applied to both of the schools as well but opted for Umich. If I were to choose between those two, it will be very tough but it's Wisconsin by a very very slight margin.

Both are great choices, but strictly academically speaking, Wisconsin is the choice, especially if you are in the social sciences. The sociology department is ranked in the top 3 in the country and its econ department ranks higher then Illinois. NOW, Urbana-Champaign is a great college town and and actually more diverse than Wisconsin. I am not sure if you are asian but based on your name you sound like you might be. I mention this because there are twice as many Asian students at UIUC and that might make you feel less homesick being so far from home. Also, Chicago is only 2.5 hours away by car and it is a great town. So it depends. Both are very very similar, so given the diversity factor. UIUC might be a better fit.

I'm facing the same choice, but I'm majoring in Computer Science. UIUC has got a great reputation for CS (and Engineering), but atmosphere and camups-wise I hear that Wisc is better. Thoughts, suggestions, comments!?

I'd pick Wisconsin.

For any computer related majors, UIUC is arguably the best in the midwest.

my friend had the same choice to make but just picked madison over u of i. im not exactly sure of the reasons but i know the town was a big factor

go madison

I'd say UIUC but it's pretty close.

35% of UW's students come from out-of-state (4% int'l); compared to 7% (5% int'l) at UIUC. How is UIUC more diverse?

Both schools are about equal in business, but UW is decidedly better in social science. Madison is a great college town and more lively. The UW-Madison campus is one of the most beautiful I've been to. The campus lies along Lake Mendota. See for yourself...

Btw, both schools are about the same distance to Chicago.

UIUC's OOS popuation is currently around 13%. I do agree that Madison has a lot bigger OOS population though.

The 7% OOS comes from USNWR for undergraduate population. Your number probably includes graduate students.

"In May (2006), the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, pulled the plug on plans to increase its proportion of out-of-state enrollment from the current 10% to 15% of the freshman class because the reaction was so negative."

Wisconsin is the way to go

No, you are wrong.

30,895 Students from all 50 states; 87% Illinois residents

Since I was more interested in the engineering field, I chose UIUC over Wisconsin... but if you are interested in Social Science, U of W is better know than UIUC is...

UIUC is more of an engineering and business school...

both schools have quite a few OOS.... both are very diverse!!

have you visited these school??

UIUC is better in business, but aside from that, it's a draw...

Both have nice, vibrant campus environments. They're just slightly different. (U-C is a smaller town though, so off-campus housing and costs of living may be cheaper at UIUC...something to look into. Madison can be a bit pricey, for the midwest.)

More ethnically diverse.

Deadline is coming soon..

I think you are good with either one... it will not make a huge difference..

As long as you like the school, you will be fine from both

UIUC - Engineering/Business Major
U of W - Scinece/Letters (anything but engineering/business)

For social sciences (ref: USNWR grad ranking):
Department.....UW....UIUC
Economics...... 11 .... 28
Political Sci..... 16 .... 22
Pyschology..... 9 ..... 5
Sociology........ 1 ..... 34

For business
Ranking...........UW....UIUC
USNWR BBA..... 12 ... 12
USNWR MBA.... 29 ... 38
Business Week.. 37 ... 18

Now forget the rankings. Ask yourself this question ... which school is a better fit for you.

I seem to recall that the word "spendy" is used quite often by the natives of Wisconsin. Anyone else concur?

Spendy? I have lived in Wisconsin all my life and have never heard that term used once.

By the way, to the OP, both are great universities. If you have not visited them, however, it is not unfair to say that the physical environment of Madison and of the Wisconsin campus are much more appealing.

There are high property taxes and parking can get expensive. People do complain about the costs of living a lot.

I don't think anyone uses that particular term though.
