I am currently in my first semester of my freshman year at Bentley University in Waltham Mass. It is predominately a business school with very little liberal arts courses. I think I would like to major in an area of Business however I would then like to apply to medical school. I know that i will have to take the pre-requisites for med school and take the MCATS. I am a volunteer EMT and Firefighter so I have a pretty decent volunteer program.

I am thinking about transferring to a different school for my undergraduate degree where I will have a better chance in getting into a well-known Medical School.

My options are:
-Fordham University at Rose Hill in Bronx, NY
-Loyola University Maryland
-Villanova University
-Providence College
-Or stay at Bentley University

Would i have a better chance of getting into a well-known med school if I get my UG at one of those schools? Or should I just go where I can get the highest GPA? Also are there any other schools that I should look at in addition to the ones listed above?

Thanks

My understanding is Med School admission is mostly based on two things: MCAT scores and GPA. Go where you have the best chance for those. Saving $ for your med school should also be an important point because it is so costly.

Are you getting financial aid/scholarships at Bentley? If so, it’s unlikely you would get good aid as a transfer student.

If you’re getting aid at Bentley, how much do YOU have to pay (including loans and work-study)

If you’re paying full freight at Bentley, then you should transfer since the other schools cost about the same and would be better. Better yet, transfer to you instate flagship…that would probably be your cheapest.

What is your state school?

im paying full tuition at bentley right now.

what is instate flagship?

i havent been looking at any state schools as of now…im from new york so if you know of any good ones i would love to hear them.

and im not necessarily looking for the cheapest school…not being a jerk but both of my parents do very well so the money is not the issue.

im just looking for the school that will be able to get me into the best possible med school for my abilities.

i am predicting i will have a 3.7 after this semester is over at bentley

Being from New York, it would be a SUNY school. SUNY does not appear to be promoting one or two campuses as flagships, though. Albany, Binghamton, Buffalo, Geneseo, and Stony Brook would be examples of SUNY four year schools that you may want to consider. Full list of SUNY schools here: [suny.edu - Our Campuses](http://www.suny.edu/About_SUNY/ourcampuses.cfm)

SUNY will be about $20,000 per year (some variation by campus) for a NY resident; this is far less expensive than Bentley’s $53,000 per year. Does Bentley even have the pre-med courses?

Remember that medical school is expensive. If you save your parents’ money now, they may be able to help you more if you get into medical school.

oh yeah i know about SUNY schools…my brother currently goes to SUNY Stony Brook.

Again I am not worried about the financial situation all I am really wondering is does it matter where I get my UG degree from? Or should I just go to a school where I can get a very high GPA even if it is not as challenging as other schools?

Which has a higher weight: graduating from a very respected university with a slightly lower gpa or from a easier school with a higher gpa say 3.5 and up?

Medical schools are said to look at MCAT and GPA with little or no adjustment for the school or courses / major chosen (as long as you take the pre-med courses). Of course, other criteria like medicine-related extracurriculars, interviews, etc. get factored in for those who make the cut on the MCAT and GPA criteria. Ask on the pre-med forum for more information.

Note that [grade inflation](http://www.gradeinflation.com) tends to be greater at more selective schools (see the list of schools at the bottom), so it is not always a given that you will get a higher GPA at a less selective school.

do you know of any schools comparable to the ones i listed above that you would suggest looking at also?
thanks!

Go to Geneseo. Ask your parents to give you the difference in tuition costs (200,000 - 80,000 = 120,000) as a gift at graduation.

that would be a good idea but isnt Geneseo a very difficult school? From what I hear Med Schools look more at your GPA and less at where you actually went for your UG. I don’t know if I would be able to have a high GPA at Geneseo

Since money isn’t an issue, then transfer to a school that is strong in the sciences, has excellent science profs, and has excellent pre-med advising.

If that’s Nova, then go there…if it’s Fordham, then go there. Consider SLU as well.

All i’ve ever heard about Bentley is that it’s great for B-majors. If it doesn’t have many pre-meds, then it may not have adequate pre-med advising.

I can’t imagine that it will be any more difficult than…

Fordham University
Loyola University Maryland
Villanova University

Remember, med schools will carefully look at your grades in the required weed out courses…chemistry, biology, etc. Those are tough at all schools.

very good points thanks! ill be back with more questions im sure

Thanks everybody!

You definitely should transfer out of Bentley if you aren’t going to pursue a business career. If you are going to be looking at Med schools, you should take a look at Universities that have med schools.

right that was something else i was curious about. should i look at Stony Brook for example because they have a very good med school also?

do schools like that look favorably on you if you got UG also from that school also?

thanks
