Which School?

Should I go to Syracuse or SUNY-Geneseo? My major will be english....any suggestions?

Syracuse is typically considered the more prestigious school, but I imagine that a SUNY school would be much cheaper.

Why not apply to both and see what happens?

I am not sure about English in particular, but SUNY Geneseo is supposed to have a great honors college. Recently, some consider the honors college at Geneseo to be the best undergraduate college in the SUNY system. Therefore, if you are a New York resident, Geneseo would give you a great value for a good education. Syracuse is private and therefore much more expensive, assuming you don't get a scholarship. That being said, Syracuse has a very nice campus, a great college town, bigtime athletics, and lots of school spirit. So, if money is a factor, SUNY Geneseo is a great option. Otherwise it just depends on your preferences, especially whether you want a large or small school.

SUNY Geneseo

Geneseo!

Syracuse is great for specific programs, but because Geneseo is cheap, it will pull in more top students than Syracuse will. I also don't think that Syr is the best place for a liberal arts education, whereas Geneseo has liberal arts written all over it, plus a great education program, if you want to go into teaching later on.

i don't know

I must disagree with, or at least question, the poster poster's comment that "Syracuse is typically considered the more prestigious school"(??????) To me this means, if I can interpret it at all, that more people among the general public have heard of Syracuse than Geneseo; that I CAN agree with. By the same token more people have probably heard of LSU than of Harvey Mudd. However, check out, for instance, entering student stats. By the way, Geneseo as a whole is calling itself the "SUNY Honors College". Although this is imo somewhat of a marketing ploy, Geneseo does in fact occupy this role in the SUNY system (along with Binghamton possibly). Their English department is reputed to be very good, and you will get more of an LAC feel there than at Syracuse, although Geneseo is on the large side for an LAC (about 6000 students). Syracuse is also basically an urban environment, while Geneseo is definitely in a one-horse town, so you might want to take that into consideration. It it was my decision, I would pick Geneseo in a heartbeat.

PS: I generally don't put much stock in this kind of thing, but at least to refute the claim that "Syracuse is more prestigious":

SYRACUSE
SAT CR Middle Range: 550-650
SAT Math Middle Rnage: 570-680
Ave. GPA: 3.60
% in Top 10% of Class: 45%

GENESEO
SAT CR Range: 600-670
SAT MAth Range: 620-680
Ave. GPA: 3.80
% in Top 10% of HS: 54%

So, at least among those who make the choice of a school to attend, I would say that Geneseo is not hurting with respect to Syracuse.

Yeah. What I meant by that: Syracuse is better known/respected on a national level. Whereas, most people outside of the Northeast probably aren't terribly familiar with Geneseo.

Granted...
