Which school?!?!

Hey guys!
It’s May and I still don’t know which school I’m going to! I got into the musical theatre programs and have narrowed it down to these 3 schools: Millikin University, Wright State University, and Shenandoah Conservatory of Music. I loved every school when I visited and auditioned. I’m not sure which has the better program and reputation. If anyone can help me out that would be wonderful!

Shenandoah for sure.

Littlepeach916,

What are you looking for exactly? Don't worry as much with reputation as much as which one fits you best. I don't know about Shenandoah, but Millikin has extremely strong dance, and in order to stay in the program there, you WILL become a good dancer as well as a great singer and actor. (You can earn a dance minor with little more work than the BFA MT requires.) If the programs are truly the same for you, look at the cities the schools are in, and the proximity to your home. How about showcases? If you plan to end up in NYC, then the showcase might come into your decision. (Millikin does one and this year's participants all got agents and jobs.) Good luck...what a GOOD problem to have!!!

thanks gkoukla, what makes you say Shenandoah over the other schools? did you go there or know anyone that does? thanks for your help.

Thanks mama02girlz, that helps me out a lot. I didn't realize they had such a great outcome of students at their showcase. I really liked Millikin when I visited. I stayed the weekend and hung out with the students, everyone was so nice and outgoing I felt right at home. The only downer (I’m sure you’ll find this at most schools) was the partying, the girl I stayed with was a Freshman BFA acting major. She and her theatre friends stayed up the whole night drinking vodka and listening 2 show tunes. I’m not really into the drinking, so it wasn’t as fun for me as it was for them. I really want to be surrounded by students that are serious about their education in musical theatre. I know Millikin hurdles their students, with that kinda partying, I know I’d burn out fast and wouldn’t be able to keep up with my school work and classes. However, I think the girl and her friends I stayed with were an exception. If I end up going to Millikin, which at this point looks like I will, I’d like to find some friends that do something other than drinking on the weekends for entertainment. Overall, it seemed like an exciting challenging program. I sat in on a senior dance class and mt vocal class, the talent level was excellent (just as good, or even better then the class I saw at CCM!)

The only one of the schools on your list I know about, is Wright State. It has an excellent reputation, a NY showcase, and the grads I know are working. Also has a strong dance component, and opportunities for excellent dancers to dance in local professional companies.

It is a BFA - more theatrically based than some of the music-based programs.

You guys thought you could have a discussion about Millikin and not include me!

Littlepeach -- You will find that I am the Millikin cheerleader around here, although there are a couple of other Moms that are pretty excited about the school. My daughter is finishing up her Freshman year there. She's a strong dancer, and this place still challenges her.

As far as the drinking, there are a lot of kids that don't drink there. A lot of them are very serious about their profession and work hard. Although they have their share of fun, too. Daughter has told us about making snow angels and staying up late playing board games and going ice skating. The MT kids are very close and very supportive of each other.

The classes are small, the teacher care, and my Daughter is happy. (OK, she's mad at me right now, but that's another story . . .)

At this point in the post, I would normally offer to give you her e-mail address and/or IM name, in case you had any questions. But I happen to know that she is totally swamped right now. Finals are next week, plus she has to be home this weekend for summer play rehearsal.

Littlepeach:

Go with your gut instinct. What's "right" for one may not be so for another. Close your eyes, hold your breath, think hard and choose.

Good luck!

You have been accepted to three fine schools. Congratulations!!!
Since they're all great choices, narrow it down by what is important to you----- location, tuition costs, senior showcase, etc.???

Good luck to you. I'm sure you will be happy at any of these schools! Please let us know your decision.
