Which one should I send for generally science and engineering majors? I know I failed ACT science but I had straight As in honors and AP science classes in school.

You didn’t fail science. It is a low score for most selective colleges but percentile wise it is still in the upper 80s I think? If you had to pick one I would think you should send the ACT but what do I know The fact that you want to go into science is the dilemma of course. What schools are you applying to (LAC or STEM Universities?) and how strong is the rest of your record- unweighted gpa etc? The type of school you are applying to might matter. If LAC I would think it matters less than for a major STEM/Engineering school. To me your ACT seems like a more competitive composite overall. If you want to retake ACT you will probably do better on the science with a little prep.

I have pretty solid GPA. 3.821 10-12 unweighted and something like 4.3 weighted. I’m mostly applying to chemistry related majors and a few chemical engineering. I’m applying to around 23 different universities, they’re generally around UC Davis/UM levels, and a few reaches like Northwestern ED and Rice, JHU. Have a few safeties too.

Take my comments with a grain of salt as I am new to this process as well. I think if you want to present a strong application to the very selective STEM schools (to their chem departments) you really need to take the chem subject test and you should consider taking the ACT again to raise the science part of your score. Your GPA is ballpark but doesn’t make up for the lower composite score (and combined SAT) at your reach schools. So you need more pieces to make you stand out and subject tests are absolutely one way to do it though time is running out. Also, assume they will calculate UW GPA over all 4 years so don’t hope that 9th grade doesn’t count- assume it will. I think you will need a pretty compelling story or a decent hook to have a chance at your reaches- go for it but focus on your matches and safeties unless you can score well on chem subject test and/or get higher overall scores on ACT composite or SAT combined. Good luck, you should be a great candidate for many schools out there!

Yep! I did take the chem subject test and got 790, which I think is presentable? My parents are outraged at my scores and simply won’t allow me to take the ACT again. But I only got a 4 on AP Chem, though I did get As both semesters in the course. I’d personally place my match at UC Davis, which I think I have a fair chance at?

790 is excellent and will surely help! I am not at all in the loop with the UC schools. Maybe post to those specific forums to see what people in the know think about your scores and chances. But 790 on chem is excellent, and As in AP chem are more important than the 4 I think (which is still a good score but I know you would have loved to see a 5).
