Which scores are better

So I have a 760 math, 690 cr,680 writing in my sat
My freind has a 800 math, 620 cr, 750 writing.
Which scores are better ?
His overall scores are 40 points higher but his scores have a lot of variation.

Yours. Writing doesn’t mean much, so you have a 1450 to his 1420. Also, at least to me, more consistent scores appear better. 720-800 is worse than 760-760, unless you’re gunning for somewhere like MIT, in which case an SAT math of below 800 disqualifies you.

Bit of an exaggeration, but not too much.

Scoring it both ways, though, your difference is so small, 30-40 points, that it falls within the expected variation of the test, meaning your differences could easily be due to chance. This does not show that one of you is not “better” than the other at all.

MIT does not disqualify at all under 800.

Their score percentiles for admitted students are 740-800 for 25th-75th %.

Which means a whole bunch were accepted without an 800.

Does it really matter which score is better?

@wrywry MIT said on its admissions website that your SAT scores don’t matter a whole lot past a certain point, like 750+, but that the higher SAT scores had higher admissions rates probably due to a correlation in overall achievement and grades with the SAT. Not that that is a rule, just a trend.
