I took the SAT Subject tests for Math Level II and Physics because I was hoping to get into Carnegie Mellon, who requires them. I got a 640 and a 680, respectively, both of which are pretty crappy scores. I already arranged to send them directly to CMU, but my question is, should I also put these scores on the Common App? Will they work against me if I want to apply to another good school that doesn't require SAT Subject tests?

First, the scores are not that bad. Second, for impact for schools that do not require IIs, one needs to know what schools you are talking about. For example, many colleges that do not require IIs won’t even consider them for admission, others recommend having them and still others will consider them if sent. Third, what you list on the app will itself probably have little impact no matter which college because they will rely instead on official score reports.

Okay. Thanks for your help!

Since you’re sending score reports to CMU, you should mark those scores on the CA you send to them. For schools that don’t require Subject tests, make an alternative version of the CA (see the CA subforum or the CA website) without tests scores and send that version to them.
