I got a 2270 on the SAT and a 33 on the ACT. If you compare them on an equivalency chart, they're worth about the same thing. However, at some colleges (like Harvard), my SAT barely puts me at the middle of the pack of accepted students, and my ACT puts me in the top quarter.

Another factor is my SAT IIs -- all are in the low to mid-700s. If I were to send only my ACT scores, the colleges wouldn't know about my somewhat disappointing showing on the subject tests.

So, do I send just one or the other, or both?

Some schools, like Harvard, require SAT IIs regardless if you send ACT or SAT scores.

That said, I think it depends on your region. I'm safe sending just my ACT scores because I'm from Michigan, and we're pure ACT-land. I think I know two other people in my grade (of 500) who took the SAT. But isn't California mostly SAT-region? You may want to just send both.

If your two scores are approximately the same, always send the SATs. Many colleges already require SATII scores, and in those grade reports all scores are shown. Thus, I fail to see why you would waste like 9 bucks a pop for an equivalent score. And most colleges that seem to be low on ACTs just get so few ACT scores sent to them the numbers are unreliable. Don't think sending in ACT scores would make you look better than those who send SATs.
