Lets hear your opinion... I got a 31 on the ACT and my SAT grades were 1340 (M+CR) and a 1990 (including writing)

do you think it would be advantageous to send my ACTs (roughly equivalent to a 1380) , or both my ACT's and my SATS??

I think you would be fine just sending the ACT, since it is a higher equivalent. (did you take the ACT w/writing?)

its better if u submit your SAT scores. a 1340 combined score is competitive in its own merit. and colleges like to see that u have taken the SAT

Plenty of Ivys admit people with only the ACTs. They convincingly state that either test is acceptable. There is a regional mindset on the east coast that the SAT is crucial, but it is more folklore and tradition than factual. Just send both if you have concerns.

Your ACT score is stronger. Send that. It’s a pernicious myth that colleges prefer the SAT. They say they don’t, and they have no reason to lie about it. And all colleges now accept students who submit only the ACT. There’s not a huge difference between a 31 ACT (which translates to 1380 SAT) and a 1340 SAT. If you submit both, many colleges will only use the 31 ACT as it’s the higher score. But some may be concerned if your 1340 SAT isn’t at or above their 75th percentile, and might therefore view your application less favorably because if you report both scores they’ll need to use both scores in calculating their 25th and 75th percentiles. The 31 ACT is more likely to help them in this regard, both because it’s a higher score and because unlike the ACT, many schools superscore the SAT, with the result that their 75th percentile SAT scores are higher than their 75th percentile ACT equivalents. Wake Forest, for example, reports a 75th percentile ACT of 31 (=1380 SAT), but and SAT CR+M 75th percentile of 1400. Send in your ACT score and you’re in the top quartile. Send in your SAT score and you’re not only in the second quartile, but pretty far down in it.

At NYU the gulf is even bigger: they also report a 75th percentile ACT of 31, but a 75th percentile CR+M of 1440. There your 31 ACT puts you in the top quartile, but your 1340 SAT puts you in the third quartile. That’s a huge difference.

bclintonk, i said colleges would prefer to "see that u have taken the SAT ". i didn’t say that they prefer the SAT over the ACT. Whatever ‘pernicious myth’ you are talking about doesnot concern this discussion. And if metboyjon is not applying to NYU, then your statistics are totally irrelevant here.

metboyjon, your ACT and SAT scores are both decent. So, certainly you can send either. its true that your higher ACT scores will be favoured in certain colleges- and ur SAT scores will be favoured in others. so do some research and find out which score will show you on a better light at ur desired college. and i am sorry if my previous suggestion sounded biased towards SAT.

fauve, stop being immature. i am sorry to disappoint you but i am not from the east coast.

A preference for the SAT by east coast applicants and colleges in the PAST is well-documented, the topic has nothing to do with any particular poster.

I have absolutely no interest in your geographical residence, only your statement that “colleges like to see that u have taken the SAT.”

That is an outdated, unsupported assumption.

The example was obviously illustrative. Do the research. You’ll find a similar pattern at pretty much all schools. Because SATs are superscored and ACTs aren’t, the 75th percentile median SAT scores will generally be higher than the corresponding 75th percentile ACT scores. There’s another, more technical reason for this that I don’t have time to go into here. But bottom line a 31 ACT is stronger than a 1340 SAT CR+M and consequently as between the two, the 31 ACT will make a more favorable impression at just about any school in the country.

^^
I agree with bclintonk.

Pshh. I’ve advised my daughter to “send it all”. It’s you. If you get in, then it’s a good fit for you. If you don’t get it…you probably wouldn’t have felt comfortable if you “fudged” your way upward. NYU specifically says (in their forums) to just send them everything and THEY will pick the best scores. Their system is so confusing anyway that I’ll LET them have that chore. My D’s ACT is also a slightly higher conversion (34 vs 2210)…but they know what they’re looking at. Why not just send them all? Might be on your high school transcript anyway…my D’s school records them and sends them along with your transcript.
