I got into both NYU and Berkeley today and I'm having a tough time deciding. I live in Cali and Berkeley is very affordable and has great academics, but I still can't decide. Which would you choose and why?

This is a no brainer for you, go to Berkeley. Unless you are majoring in business and plan on moving to nyc (haas is an excellent business school anyway) go to berkeley. It's the best public school in the nation and it has a great reputation. Plus the difference in cost is huge.

thanks for the nice response

Hey, I got accepted to both colleges also. I've wanted to study in New York City for the past 4 years and now I have to make the decision between my dream college and the best public school in the nation. I also live in CA and Berkeley will be obviously cheaper. NYU offered me a decent fin. aid package so that helps....I don't know what your major is, but I'm planning to major in Astrophysics and I'm pretty sure Berkeley has a better program. HoWever, I believe that both schools are academically strong and I am choosing NYU over Berkeley because my gut tells me to go to New York.....Hope you and I make the right decisions.

This is not a no-brainer. Obviously both are great schools, but its what you want thats the issue. How big of a concern is money? If money is not a huge concern, choose NYU...better location and better student body. Also, Berkeley and the UC system in general are in decline, pretty much in shambles....while NYU is on a big upward tracjectory.

Adore88,

As a matter of fact, NYU Physics department already has a very strong Astrophysics/Cosmology group. Moreover, the department is about to hire several new faculty in this field to make it even stronger. See the ad for open faculty positions on the Physics web site http://www.physics.nyu.edu/.
Rest assured that you would get a first-rate education, and research experience, in Astrophysics at NYU, as you would in Berkeley of course.

atnyu,

Thanks for your reply...I do have confidence in NYU's Physics department and I have made the decision to go to New York for sure! I am very excited about going and I assume from your SN that I might see you there.

i wish i got to make that decision for me it would be berkeley but im not from cali so it was a little tougher for me to get in.... and i didnt. i would say both are great choices just look into your field and maybe visit sit in on some classes at both if possible

GO TO NYU ELAINE

(yes I found your sneaky attempt at hiding)

You got into nyu EARLY DECISION and already sent in your deposit. It's hard to get out of that one. Plus you KNOW you want nyu more.

Well of course Berkeley is harder to get into outside of CA because the number of out of staters are capped at a very small percentage of the class. There used to be a time when UC Berkeley was mentioned in the same breath as Harvard, but not anymore. Berkeley and the entire UC system are in huge decline.

NYU definitely has a higher quality student body.

SAT 50% range:
NYU: 1300-1450
UC Berkeley: 1190-1440
