Hello, I’ll try to keep this short. So basically I am a good student who cares greatly about school and I just finished up my freshman year at an Ivy league school and I absolutely hated the social atmosphere there and made no friends. So, now I am transferring and my choices are between going to Virginia Tech for engineering or University of Delaware for engineering and I realize that VT’s engineering program is much better than UD’s but UD is close to home and a lot of my high school friends went there. So, my question is should I stay close to home or should I take a chance at being a social outcast again at VT? Any advice is welcome and greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I’d pick UD to be certain that you will be happy. As long as it is ABET accredited you should be fine.
Please share your ivy school & experience to help others not make the same mistake. I’m guessing? Was it Princeton?
Which school were you at? you were posting about transferring as early as October. Had you not visited the school/
Go to UD…you have friends there.
How can we advise you if you give no details regarding why you were unhappy, don’t name the Ivy or describe the environment you were in? How do you know you will be happy at the other two other than falling back into old friendships at U of Delaware?
Maybe you should take a gap year before you leave your school or choose a new one.
Virginia Tech seems like a welcoming campus, with many social opportunities and lots of different groups.
That being said, it’s hard to give a good response without more info. Would UD be in-state for you? Sounds like it. I’m not sure it’s worth paying OOS $$ for VT if you have an ABET certified program in your state.
My sibling and niece absolutely love VT, for whatever that is worth.
Sorry I was trying to keep my post short but I see now that I left out a lot of info. Thank you to those who responded tho. So the school was Cornell and like I said I made little to no friends. It is a very isolating social scene there if you are not in greek life and on top of that I do not make new friends easily. I suffered from anxiety and depression most of the time that I was there and I do not want to go through that again at VT. However, I have never once heard someone speak a bad word about VT. In short, the upside of VT is their highly ranked engineering program and the up side for UD is my really good friends go there. Thank you once again for your input.
@Coplilsam I’ll leave it to others more versed on the merits of the UD vs VT engineering programs, but thank you for providing more color. I wish you the best in this next step in your college life and good for you for taking steps to find an environment you’ll feel more comfortable in. All the best to you in the year ahead!
Frankly, IMO if you were anxious and depressed at Cornell you probably should go to UD since you know people there.
