Which should i go to... UVA or VT?

I just got into Virginia Tech and UVA... I'm planning on doing business management right now, but that could honestly change very easily. I know that UVA has a much better name, and I'd get a lot of a higher paying job than graduating from Tech. But tech has the whole school spirit and "like a family" thing... not to mention I'd be interested in joining a sorority at Tech but not at UVA... I haev to decide in like a week.. I'm also not into the whole appearance-oriented ppl at UVA... but I know I could probably find my niche there... but Tech would be more of an "experience"... any advice here??

From what you’ve written, it sounds like you have already decided that you personally like VT better or at least feel that it is a better fit for you, judging from the positives for VT and negatives for UVA:

– Tech has the whole school spirit and “like a family” thing
– I’d be interested in joining a sorority at Tech, but not at UVA
– I’m not into the whole appearance-oriented ppl at UVA
– Tech would be more of an “experience”

The only positive you gave to UVA was the rather impersonal observation that it had a much better name and would lead to a much higher-paying job (which, by the way, is certainly not a given).

If I’m reading you correctly, then you should go to VT as that seems to be where your heart lies.

Hi! UVa has a better department for your interest, and also it has a much higher per capita endowment than Tech, hence UVa can give you a much better undergraduate experience, if and only if academics was your only concern. You’ve probably heard about how snotty UVa kids are, which is true for many people there but let’s not make hasty generalizations; that is to say, you should try to find, as you said, your own niche and pursue your own goal. I personally would not go to either school cause they’re HUGE lol; I got into UVa too! Visit the campus and go with you heart on this one because college experience is much more than just prestige and name…screw those phony people  good luck!

Worried mom has it right!

Ah thanks guys… and yes, I was leaning towards Tech at first… but when I think about Charlottesville and UVA I love that too. The major downside of UVA is the sororities and stuck-up reputation… The major downside of Tech is the not getting as good of a job (most likely) Tech’s business school is 57th I think, whereas UVA is #1…

^^^^Don’t kid yourself, Wharton is number 1.

ushwalovwoua23, First off congrats on being accepted to two great schools! Where would you be the happiest? That is for you to decide. It is important to remember that the right fit involves different factors for everyone. Some highly value the prestige of an Ivy league school, some highly value the small size of a LAC, some value the importance of big time athletics, etc. There is no “right” or “wrong” choice- it is your choice and your chance.

VT may not have the business school reputation that UVA has, but it does have many, many things, (including the ones you wrote about), that keep its student body very happy and engaged. If you are not hellbent on business, then take that into account. I liked what bluepurple wrote, college is so much more than prestige and name.

VT does have a special environment and some really special kids. It is in one word: community. You can feel it. I am biased, I have a son there, but after being on many, many campuses (including UVA) I can truly say that none of them feel more tight-knit than Tech. There is no comparison.

Best of luck in your decision! When you make it, be happy and do great wherever you end up- Bburg or Cville!
