Which Smith House for Quiet Student?

I live in Capen house, which is on Upper Elm. We are known as the “Quad off the Quad”, meaning that we tend to be one of the more rambunctious houses on Elm. A typical week night, though, isn’t usually terribly noisy: people tend to leave their doors open, but it’s very easy to study in your room or in one of the common rooms should you like. Often, people will get together to watch shows in the TV room while doing work, play foozeball, make cookies, etc. There’s a decent amount of socializing, but it’s not hard to get your stuff done. Of course, I can’t speak for every Upper Elm house, but I bet that this tends to be the case in most Elm houses. In any case, in Capen you definitely have the opportunity to buckle down and work or socialize, should your work load be light (Ha! Fat chance that this happen very often)/ you feel like slacking for a bit.

Rivalries tend to be between houses in close proximity of one another. For instance, “sister” houses (such as Comstock-Wilder, Cutter-Ziskind) may have strong rivalries. My dorm has a strong and, as far as we are concerned, serious rivalry with Talbot house (I live in Capen). Of course, no one means any serious harm to the residence of any other house, but pranks and antics often occur.

Mollyoh’s description of Capen matches Haven-Wesley (Center Campus) pretty well.

Haven-Wesley has a rivalry with Chapin.

I’ve had a chance to compile the stats for the '08 graduating class and Latin Honors—cum laude, magna cum laude, summa cum laude—by area of campus. There actually are some non-trivial differences between areas. Stay tuned. It’ll probably be Sunday, maybe Monday, before I can post them. I have to fiddle around with html tables to present the data well.

(how’s that for a teaser like on the TV news?)

Iirc, there’s also a rivalry between Chase and Duckett.

My favorite needle about one House from another was, "House X, where not even the walls are straight.

It’s important to remember that House characteristics can change a lot from year to year as the chemistry of people moving in, moving out evolves. In two years, a House can be unrecognizable to its former self. Thus if someone raves about how good/bad a House was four years ago, just ignore it.

I’m waiting, TD . . . .

Hey,TD. I’m waiting too, although my hopes sank a little when I read on the Jolt that a 3.8 GPA only gets you a cum laude. I’m really starting to feel guilty that I pushed my D into taking much harder courses than she had intended to. She learnt a lot, but she didn’t get As…

When will Smith send out room assignments? Early or late July?

Rumor is mid-July, but one of the returning students on the 2013 facebook group just said it’d be more like late July. :[

You can now look up your smith phone number in the online directory. Based on this you can kind of figure out your house (or at least narrow down the options).

60: albright and baldwin (higher #s are baldwin, I’m not sure where the cut off is)
61: baldwin and capen (again for the higher #s being capen)
62: chapin
63: comstock
64: cushing and cutter
65: cutter and dawes, but i don’t know if first years are being put in dawes
66: duckett and emerson
67: emerson and gardiner (if yours is low, it’s emerson and high and gardiner-- i think emerson cuts off around 6720 or something like that)
68: gardiner and gillett
69: gillett and haven
70: hubbard and jordan
71: jordan and king
72: king and lamont (only low 72s are king, maybe up to 7215 or something like that)
73: lawrence and morris
74: morris
75: northrop
76: park and parsons
77: parsons and scales
78: scales, sessions and talbot
79: talbot
55: tyler and washburn
56: wilson, i don’t know if washburn also has low 56s

I’m either lamont or lawrence depending on where exactly the cut off is.

Also, if anyone knows exactly where the cut off between lamont and lawrence is that would be much appreciated.

McPucks, thanks for the information. Very clever Smithies!!! I’ll pass it on to my daughter.

I’d just like to point out that the number list is not entirely accurate. The 47 and 48 extensions are always missing, and there are a bunch of extensions that start with 4 that were used to add lines where they didn’t exist before, so they could be anywhere. :)

My daughter is in the very high 77’s(7790’s) which looks like Scales - any current Smithies have any info to share on that dorm? Is it possible she would have a single since there don;t seem to be ay doubles? If also looks to be from the description to lack the traditions of some of the other quad houses - is that a plus or a minus?

Does anyone know the cutoff between Albright and Baldwin? I have 6069, so I’m guessing Baldwin, but not entirely sure…My mom really wants to be able to buy sheets! (Baldwin has extra-long mattresses, Albright does not.)

i dont get it, how do you figure out your number on the directory?

The facebook class of 2013 has more details and for the Smith directory just go to the directory page on the main Smith website and type in your name. You sould get your e-mail and phone number.

Anyone know the cutoff b/w Tyler and Washburn? My daughter is away and has limited internet access, so I’m trying to figure this out for her.

MomTJ - FYI according to one of the current students on facebook who works in the res life office non of the assignments are set on stone at the moment.

and re FB “Washburn has a few extensions in the low 56s; I had 5603 my first year. I think it goes to 5605, but I’m not 100% positive.”
any 40’s are new extension I think

Also wondering if there is any way to guess floor from the second part of the number? In scales are the highest numbers on the top floors? Also would still love feedback on the community there and if it is a given you have a single? Not sure if that is a plus but I guess all the freshman there would have them so hopefully they would bond anyway?

the numbers mostly go in order from room to room - a number with xx65 is probably roommates with or next to xx66 - but you can’t really tell what floor from the extension unless you’re willing to do a lot of guesswork.

Scales is all singles. And the house descriptions aren’t entirely accurate or up-to-date. Haven was renovated in 2007 and there’s no mention of it on the web site, and some of the houses have traditions listed that I don’t think they practice at the moment.
