Hello,

I'm planning to major in Computer Science, and quite a few institutions that I'm looking at require me to apply to a certain sub-school within it (for example, arts and sciences and engineering schools).

The thing is, sometimes the essay topics vary depending on which of these sub-schools I decided to apply to. I've tried going to these schools' websites and finding the list of majors offered, but I couldn't find too much information. Does anyone have advice regarding this? (Or is CompSci just never considered as engineering?)

Thanks!

It’s within the engineering faculty in a few schools near me. That sucks that it’s all over the place for you, but you’ll need to make sure you apply to the right faculty within each school. If you can’t figure it out, post the school name here and I’m sure myself or others will be able to help you sort it out. Good luck!

If you follow the links on the web pages until you get to the pages of the specific departments, the name of the college or other university division is almost always in some corner of that page. If that fails, keep clicking through until you find the information in the catalogue or in the website of one of the professors.

For example, I’m not sure if CS is within the engineering school of UPenn…

It is. I googled “university pennsylvania computer science,” and when I followed the link, it showed “Penn Engineering” in the top left. Click on the Penn Engineering link at the top in the middle, then on prospective students on the left side bar, then undergraduate, then majors, and it’ll show you that CS is definitely in that faculty. Other universities’ websites will work in a similar way.

In some universities, computer science may be offered in both an engineering division and a liberal arts and sciences division.
