Which Suny Schools for History??

A little about myself before i start:
I am a 3.2-3.5 gpa student throughout. I have only taken one AP class and a college language class. I have a 1590 SAT score (1060 critical reading and math) and i have taken the ACT, but haven't gotten my scores back yet.
I have been on my schools swim and track team since my freshmen year and will being doing cross country along with the two this year. I am also in student council, yearbook and have done various volunteer work

I am a first-gen college student so it has been pretty hard looking for schools on my own but i have summed down schools to Oswego, Cortland, UAlbany, Binghamton, and New Paltz.

Could someone tell me about some of the history programs for the schools and other things about the schools? (campus, professors, student life, etc)

I’ve been thinking the same, I want to be a History major and I’ve been hearing that Buffalo,Binghamton,Geneseo are the best.

Well Geneso is the most selective school in the SUNY system, no offense but with your grades you probably couldn’t get in there. That being said SUNY New Paltz is a good school but from what I’ve been looking at and from people I know New Paltz is a big arts school. I am also looking into SUNY cortland for education and for me personally that seems to be my best fit. Binghamton I believe (not sure) has a really good graduate education program but I’m not sure about the undergrad program. I you go to SUNY.edu you can find what school will cater to what you want. Something else you could do is check out the rest of the posts on this forum, I’m sure someone has asked about one o the schools you mentioned b
UAlbany is the biggest party school (from what I’ve heard) in the SUNY system.
Cortland is a Jock Life school. Close enough to other schools like Syracuse, and buffalo for student life.
I live near New Paltz and the area is very nice, it’s in a good area but nearby there is a lot of things to do so you won’t be bored. I’ve visited New Paltz and the campus is really nice they recently renovated the housing units so every 2 dorms share a bathroom instead of an entire floor. They have an amazing variety of good food. From vegetarian and vegan to pasta and meat lovers.

yeah I already knew i didn’t have the grades for Geneso and was thinking Binghamton for grad school but not undergrad (I live in Binghamton so i kinda want to get out of the town i have been living in all my life) and I have heard positive things about New Paltz too. I have also been thinking Oneonta as well, but i don’t know too much about it’s history department

If you are financially challenged, you can apply through EOP and it will increase your chance of going to the top SUNY.

Idk about oneonta either and I know what how you feel about Binghamton I have the same feeling about New Paltz. But yeah from what I saw when I visited New Paltz is very home like and everyone was very friendly. Beautiful campus and facilities including a huge gym, indoor track etc. I would definitely visit, It would be one of my top choices If i didn’t Live so close to it, I want to teach to, and the lady there said they have a really good education program ( which is her job) but I’ve only heard positive things!

My friend is at new paltz for history he says that it’s deff not their strongest major and he’s thinking about transferring although he likes the area and stuff
He says the academics aren’t all that

My friend’s son is at Oneonta studying history and planning on law school. This kid was not a good student in HS but he’s hit his stride and is making Honor Roll. He enjoys the classes and thinks the department is good. I am planning on taking my rising senior to see Oneonta this summer because he is interested in history (and physics).

I don’t think you have the numbers for Geneseo, Binghamton or New Paltz.

Another friend’s son is at Oswego and loves it but he is not a history major.

Derek, son’s girl friend turned down an acceptance at Geneseo to attend Oneonta. She is a rising freshman history major and after speaking with several people who work at local museums and historical sites she decided on Oneonta. They were Oneonta alums or knew of others who were. She hopes to have a career in historical restoration and Oneonta has good connections for internships in that field.
