any ideas on the strongest school for chemistry in the suny system?

Geneseo, Buffalo, or Binghamton. All are above average.

Cornell.

:)

generally speaking-- university of buffalo and stony brook are considered a bit more geared towards the sciences than the other SUNY’s. Another SUNY program is –
[SUNY-ESF, SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry](http://www.esf.edu)
it’s based on the syracuse U campus but is suny tuition.

Is your son thinking in terms of science research or HS teacher or MD?? That might make a difference in our assessment- but I think UB, StonyBrook and ESF is a good place to start your research.

as MMelody just mentioned Cornell- the only 2 colleges at Cornell that have lower tuition costs for NYS residents and are science related are the school of Human Ecology and CALS (agriculture and life science). The tuition is around $20,000 for NYS residents and is NOT Suny tuition.
My d just graduated from ILR so I am familiar with the Cornell programs.
If your kid is a high achieving student, it is worthwhile to consider the CALS and Human Ec- program at Cornell.
My other kid is at SUNY Cortland- so I am familiar with both SUNY and Cornell programs.

marny1 at this point it is medical research… either chem undergrad then phd or an md/phd program. not set in stone but seems to be firming up. last year it was definitely md/phd path, begininning of this year bs/phd, and now back to bs, md/phd. so a school that would prepare him for either. i was just looking at the stonybrook site, will go check out buffalo as well

parent- as your kid is thinking phd/ md route and is a “top-notch” student, you really should check out the programs at Cornell.
I was also impressed with University of Rochester. Not Suny tuition, but they have been generous with merit awards in the past. My info may be a bit outdated as d # 1, graduated HS in 2004 and my contact with U of R is a few years old.

i also think ESF has a pre-med track and might have joint programs with SUNY Upstate med in syracuse. I’m not that familiar with specific ESF programs, but it does seem intriqing.

also- as I type: Sophie Davis program at CUNY CCNY ??? Think it is geared for those interested in pursuing MD degrees.

unfortunately cornell has no merit based aid and we will not qualify for need-based
