I think you should really go visit the schools and see what they have to offer for you. Nothing we tell you here would change the experience YOU would get from the schools.

I’m gonna be attending UCLA this coming Fall which is perfect for me because UCLA has a lot of resources, great Political Science department, amazing student life and excellent study abroad opportunities.

However I also applied to Cal because I LOVE Northern California weather. But if I would have gotten into Cal, I would have had SO many problems trying to attend orientation and finding an apartment since I have been living in L.A. for a while now- so needless to say, I’m happy I didn’t have to make a choice.

Funny thing is that I was never too crazy about Cal campus as I was about UCLA’s…

It is OK that you are taking your math requirement this semester. They look at Fall grades. If you were taking it during the winter or spring there might have been a problem.

UCLA and Cal might be tough but they’re not completely out of reach. UCLA is a bit more straightforward with their application process but Berkeley is just… hit or miss kind of? I know someone with a 3.3 who was accepted and another with a 3.9 rejected for the same major. Regarding the whole “match” thing based solely on your stats, I’d say UCSD. But there is more to ‘the perfect match’ than your major and GPA.

You should be able to TAG into at least San Diego and Santa Barbara, right? You don’t need your IGETC math completed until the end of Fall.

Honestly, I think just about anyone should at least apply to UCLA and Berkeley. There are plenty of stories about people CCers thought had no chance getting accepted, and the worst that could happen is they say “no.”

That said, you’re a good “match” for the mid-range UCs (SB, SD, Davis, Irvine), but I wouldn’t be surprised to hear you were accepted to LA or Cal. They’re reaches, sure, but not unreachable. Write a great essay–there’s not much more you can do at this point.

fyi, i didn’t take a math course the first two years of college and am transferring to UCLA this fall. so missing that alone wouldn’t make you doomed

There’s a bobcat->bear thing, might be a bobcat->bruin one too (I can’t remember).

@ UCLAudia: (and I like your name XD)… 3.5 is a great GPA. It’s not 3.7, 3.9, 4.0 sure… but it’s not 3.1, 3.2, or 3.3 either! If you are missing prereqs, you won’t be able to TAG but you will probably have no issues with a lot of the good UCs with a 3.5 anyway.

It depends on majors though. I had a lowly 3.19 and UCSD told me they would’ve taken me with a 3.23 (for Comp. Engineering, NOT impacted… but competitive!)

@midnightgolfer CSU?? Wow. I didn’t work my fingers to the bone to end up at a cal state.
Geez, who knew a couple of typos would go a long way.

I think you really should just research which universities have the best programs for your major, you already know Merced and Riverside don’t…

My brothers girlfriend got into UCLA with a GPA of about 3.31 (music history). The program is not impacted like I imagine sociology is, but it happens. All we can tell you is to apply where YOU want to go. I think you know UCSB, UCSD, UCSC are all realistic possibilities. (Truthfully, I’ve heard tell that UCI has gotten REALLY competitive.)

Nonetheless, the point is that you should apply to some good middle tier UC’s (since CSU’s are out of the quiestion? Apply to UCLA and UCB and I would apply to UCM or UCR as a backup plan.

You can never tell solely on GPA as the application process has become a holistic one… good luck!!!

Oh and by the way, I’m also taking statistics this semester. My counselor reassured me that it’s only when you take the core classes (English, math and critical thinking) in the SPRING that things can get messy… so you’re fine :)

UCLA and Cal have the best sociology programs, but I don’t want to set my sights too high. I know I want to study where the weather is hottest (cloudy, rainy days depress me). So you can imagine that ucla is my dream school.

Are you a social science major transfering next year?
