Hey whats up guys I live in the SF Bay Area and I got into Merced, Riverside, Davis, Irvine, SB, SC, SD, and Berkeley. I've certainly ruled out merced, riverside, and irvine, and i've pretty much ruled out berkeley too because it's right in my backyard, it's extremely competitive and difficult, and I've heard many horror stories about it. So, I'm pretty much stuck between Davis, SB, SC, and SD. I'm not racist but I think I would prefer a place that's more relaxed academically and not so 'asian' if you will. Any suggestions/opinions? I need some straight up, honest info about these schools here.

If I were you,I would be sure to choose Davis.I think Davis has the most adequate and advanced resources and faculty that you can make the best of.Of course it depends on what your interest and orientation of study is.Feel free to contact me,I am John

If you want to go smewhere not so asian, and relaxed, UCSB

i'm asian, and i totally understand where you're coming from haha...it's a significant reason as to why i avoided the UC system in general when it came down to the wire.

for what you want, i would agree SB would probably be best...SD has a rep for being a school of extremely studious students (and yep asians heh), if not overly competitive. Santa Cruz seems very relaxed, academically and socially. my sister went there, had some great times and scored a sweet job doing research for Stanford only a few months after graduating. i now have a good number of friends going there now and from what i gather, it's still that way. so SC might be another place worth considering. Davis might be nice academically and all, but i've just always been turned off by the fact that it's too boring of a place to be for four years of my life. but visit the campus, you might get the right vibe from it.

yea i actually visited davis last saturday and i thought it was really nice in terms of the facilities and such but it seemed pretty boring and very asian haha. SB sounds great but the thing that kinda scares me about it is I'm afraid I might get a little too caught up in the intense party scene and lose sight of my academic goals. SC seems like a nice balance but it isn't nearly as highly rated as SD and I was hoping SD might not be so bad because of SDSU being nearby. It's a tough decision. Thanks for the advice guys keep posting stuff!

UCSB..all th way baby...

UCSD is very academically competitive and "asian" and pre med and ranked higher and tougher to get into than the other schools you are looking at (UCSB/UCD and UCSC). UCSB is much more shall i say "white" than UCSD and not as cutthroat competitive. UCSB probably will be your best choice in terms of what your looking for. However, I personally would have trouble choosing UCSB over UC Berkeley/UCSD. But if its your best fit the area is beautiful and you will deff have a fun college life if thats what your looking for. Have fun choosing. Best of luck.

Sounds like UCSB is a good match for you...

But I wouldn't rule out Berkeley so easily...from what I heard, it depends on the department. Like, if you're enrolled there in Electrical Engineering--it's mostly Asian and it's ridiculously competitive. But something like English or Psychology? You're not going to be dealing with uber-competitive grade nazis so much.

Ultimately, it depends on what you plan to study.

yea that's a good point. I do plan to be pre-med though, so I'm guessing Berkeley will be pretty cut-throat in that department. I'm also quite interested in art though and would like to do as much as I can in college without compromising my pre-med requirements. Anyway, I guess the real question here is this: If I go to UCSB, will I have trouble meeting other 'cool' white people (NOT geeks, haha) who like to party sometimes but also have enough discipline to stay in the library and study some nights when it's necessary? I do like to party but I am gonna need to refrain from being hammered 24/7, as easy as that may be at UCSB, or I'll screw myself over.

Hello Everyone,

I've been accepted in the school of Computer Science Engineering at UCLA, UCSD and UC Davis. I am having trouble choosing between UCLA and UC Davis. UCLA has a great reputation, but UC Davis seems like it would provide a more enjoyable college experience for me. I live in Silicon Valley, California. Does anyone have ANY advice? Between these two schools, will there be a huge difference in getting a job?

Please try to be unbiased.

cnatkid, why don't you start your own thread instead of leeching off someone else's.

I thought the subject was which UC to go to, not just for that individual. You don't have to be rude. Did it ever occur to you that this might be my first post, and I misunderstood the process? Pause, not!

lol..not everyone is as rude as him...(pun intended)

yea fuc you cnatkid i meant for this to be about my issue start your own thread

ssso anyways i just got back from a week-long road trip up the coast to look at ucsd, ucsb, and ucsc, and i've pretty much narrowed this all down to a choice between ucsb and cal. i wana be pre-med and im afraid it will be way too hard at cal and ill spend all my free time studying. anyone pre-med at cal?

lol waatsmyname, review the rules here at CC and be a little more courteous to CC members.

And I thought you didn't want Cal. Too competitive? Too difficult? Too close?

Cal would be great, but it IS very competitive... i think you would have more fun at santa barbara. it's a great location right on the beach, and i think you'll have enough self-discipline to hit the books when you need to if you're consciously worried right now about partying too much

lol.. COOL "WHITE" KIDS... that's a hoot!

UCSB sounds like the perfect fit for you.

Cal is ultra competitive and has a very cutthroat atmosphere.

UCSB is excellent academically, yet also laid back and is great socially.
