In other words, what good universities in the US care a lot more about grades/test scores than ECs.

Caltech definitely. just check the mid-SAT range for class of 2008: 2170-2310, and ACT: 33-35.

Caltech? Wow I live about 10 miles away from there and I didn't know that. I heard JHU was pretty number based.

Ka-Bump!!!!

Generally, state schools.

Ryan1119- Numbers are important at Caltech, but they look at ECs. Why else would they have a special section on their common app supplement specifically for "Math/science ECs"?

Public schools are usually more number-based than private schools.

I heard U Chicago is pretty numbers-based.

Mollie.
Pls Caltech is one of the best schools in the country. Of course they'd look at EC's.
They are looking for math & science specific EC's because the school is math/science dominated. They don't have really strong humanities programs.
Caltech would be probably one of the most number-based schools in the US.

@ bothwings: JHU is actually one of the least-numbered based excluding GPA.

They put a lot of weight on GPA, teacher recs, and essays. Then they take a look at your test scores and see how you round out.

PRINCETON FOR SURE.
Mid 50%:
2110-2390

I actually thought Princeton wasn't very number based.....
