Which University to choose?

Hi everyone,

I applied for PHD in computer science in a couple of universities. And got accepted in a couple. Right now I am stuck in two universities with similar offers.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Oregon State University.

I can't decide which one to choose. Both have given TA for the first year and also similar kind of stipend. RPI is slightly higher in overall ranking and also seems to be more reputed. But the difference is not that huge. For example, RPI is 47 in US news ranking while OSU is 65.

Another thing that might be important is the weather. As far I know, OSU has the better weather and less cold. But RPI is in New York which is a big plus in terms of facilities and lifestyle.

So, taking all these considerations, which one would you choose?

Congratulations on your acceptances.

RPI is in the small city of Troy, N.Y., near the state capital of Albany. It’s 157 miles from New York City.

Therefore, RPI in Troy is not really going to be that different in terms of lifestyle and community than OSU in Corvallis.

Hey, thanks. I know the communities will be similar. But Im more interested to know which university will be better for cs, in terms of both reputation and academics such as faculty quality/research opportunity and so on. Is RPI comparable to GATech, Maryland or Southern California?
