Which US or Canadian University to do exchange with for Economics?

Hey everyone,

I'm planning on doing an exchange for my last semester next year (beginning January) and currently go to ANU in Australia. I am studying BA International Business but have been trying to fit as many Economics courses into my degree as possible.
Out of the list of 'exchange partners' below, which ones would people recommend for great economics/business schools?

CANADA
Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia
McGill University, Montreal, Quebec
Queens University, Ontario
University of Ottawa
University of Toronto
Simon Fraser University
University of Alberta

USA
Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana
Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana
University of California
(Please note, applicants apply to the University of California system, not to individual campuses. Individual campuses are not guaranteed)
-Santa Barbara
-Berkeley
-Davis
-Irvine
Los Angeles
University of Southern California, Marshall School of Business
University of Texas at Austin, McCoombs School of Business
Riverside
San Diego
Santa Cruz
University of North Carolina
University of Oregon
University of Rochester
State University of New York
-Brockport
-Stony Brook
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
University of Texas, Austin
University of Washington (Seattle)

Take them with a huge grain of salt, but graduate school rankings might be a good place to get a first impression of the relative strengths of various departments:

b@r!um thanks for the quick reply! From those lists i’d be leaning towards UCLA, Marshall and Rochester. I will admit they weren’t my first picks because i haven’t heard of Rochester but i will look into it
Its a shame we can’t directly apply to university of california campuses because Berkley definitely sounds like the way to go. What are people’s opinion of McCoombs? I was browsing through the university websites and thought McCoombs to be a little better than Marshall (as far as courses i was after) but id love to hear others opinions as well!

try the study abroad forum

Or the College Search and Selection forum. I think the study abroad forum is more popular among Americans interested in going outside of the US.

Rankings are useful to some extend but not the end of all being. UT Austin is a very strong university and if their course offerings appeal more to you than that of other universities, it doesn’t matter that other programs might be slightly higher ranked.

I would definitely take the reputation of the universities back in your home country into account though. Rochester might have a strong economics program, but if no one in your country has heard of it, it may not be the best program for you to attend. Ideally you could find a program with strong academics that also has a reputation in your home country, because it might make a better impression on prospective employers.

Thanks for the responses both of you! I’ll have a search in the other forums as well. I asked the advisor what the most popular business school was for applicants and he said probably Marshall. I’m leaning towards McCoombs, UCLA and Marshall as my top three at the moment…

I would recommend McGill, Queen’s, University of Toronto, and Berkeley :)

NYU Stern is nice)
