After graduation, I might move to Asia... and one of the places I'm looking to move to is South Korea. I'm wondering which US colleges are considered prestigious there? Can anyone provide some sort of list or any information? Thanks!

Of course the obvious answers are HYPSM, which is a ‘name-brand’ that a lot of people know. This can be shown by Korean professors/doctors/lawyers having their English speaking children study very rigorously and applying to these schools. However, people who are more aware of education the US and specialized in their field will be aware of most of the top colleges/universities. It just depends whether you are looking for a name almost everybody will know eg. Harvard, or one that those who know basics of US colleges will know (in this case, any place that is considered prestigious in the US).

In Korea, the only schools that people consider pretigious are the schools that they’ve HEARD OF. (And I really hate this, as a Korean applying to schools in the States)

This comes as a surprise to most people, but most Koreans have never heard of Dartmouth or University of Pennsylvania. But, once you mention that they are one of the ivy league universities, you’ll see their change in attitude (Koreans care about where you go for college, believe me):)

More have heard of Stanford, Cornell, Berkeley, UCLA and NYU (usually just because of the “New York” part). Surprisingly, not many of the “common” people know about MIT. Only handful would know other good schools like Duke, Northwestern, Emory, WashU etc, and almost everyone will think that U Chicago is a state school.

Of course, it becomes different when you are talking to people who KNOW what they are talking about (say, they lived in the states, are going to the states for college, are employers at a large corporation, etc). But don’t expect most people to know more than HYPSM, Stanford, Cornell, Berkeley, UCLA and NYU.

Princeton is surprisingly not that well known among the general public. Everyone knows Harvard. Most people will know Yale (George Bush) and Stanford (a famous singer graduated from there). Almost no one knows Dartmouth, Brown, Upenn, Columbia, and Cornell, although occasionally people know Dartmouth (Korean president) and Columbia and Cornell (NY).

generally south koreans know about the wellknown schools on either coast. On the west coast it’s UCLA, USC, Stanford, Berkeley, and Caltech is increasing in popularity as well. On the east coast, basically HYP, though princeton not as much as the other two. Duke and JHU are widely known to the korean public. The other ivies are known for their specialities (ex. They know wharton more than penn)
