Which US universities are comparable to UCLA?

<p>Appreciate the link. I’ve been inactively trying to find this for a little while. I knew you were the unofficial cc gatekeeper of this link, and I probably should have searched your history for the it, or PM’ed you. And I stated that Illinois has better CS and engineering depts in one of my previous posts, so I knew they were representative in STEM Bac’s -> PHD’s. </p>

There are three universities in California which are unarguably better than UCLA in the sciences (B [Berk],C [CIT] and S [Stanford].) Illinois probably has a lot less competition with high-caliber universities in this respect.

<p>I wished you asked me about this one beforehand; I would have advised against this post. As barrons stated, there are a lot of top-notch STEM u’s in the Big Ten. </p>

UCLA is not even the 2nd best UC in hard sciences/engineering.</p>

<p>UCSD is better than LA in most science/engineering fields and I think SB beats them in math and physics.</p>

<p>However, UCLA is better than SD in social sciences and of course athletics, which also accounts for LA’s ‘reputation/prestige’

<p>You’re talking about rankings. UCLA will always be competitive with SD and SB in these fields because its students are generally a bit better. But SD’s engineering students are excellent also. Not really much difference in quals of the admits to these specialties between Berk, SD, and UCLA. </p>

In general, UCSD has a slight edge over UCLA in the hard sciences.</p>

<p>Chemistry: UCSD: 21; UCLA: 16
Physics: UCSD: 14; UCLA 19
Engineering: UCSD: 14; UCLA 16
Computer Science: Both 14</p>

<p>UCLA however, has a strong edge in law: UCSD: 61; UCLA: 15
Business: UCSD: not ranked (+100), UCLA: 15</p>

<p>a significantly better hospital (honor roll), and a generally much more significant edge in humanities (in general probably at least +15.) These things are what accounts for UCLA’s prestige.</p>

<p>Few universities are exceptional in all fields. UCSD can keep its slight edge in the hard sciences if it means that UCLA can keep its much larger edge in nearly anything else.

<p>You’re somewhat mixing and matching, by including grad programs. That’s my only beef … keep going otherwise. </p>
