Hi, I am a newcomer in the field of SAT.
I've just taken my diagnostic test in SAT 2 math level 1C. and My score was 710. If I work hard, I believe that I can score upto 760-770 quickly(actually I did some strategical mistakes in that test)
I've never taken any test before and I had no idea SAT before taking that exam.

But as I want to admit into top universities, what will better for me, taking math level 1 or level 2. I want a generalized advice which will be applicable for most universities.

Math Level 2 definitely. I go to a pretty competitive high school, and basically all of my classmates (I’m a junior) are planning on taking the Level 2. That is because the Level 1 is not really considered “high level math” and most top universities are probably hoping that you come in with at least knowledge of trigonometry, which is basically the extent of the Level 2. That’s what I’m prepping for right now; I took the Level 1 for practice at the end of my sophomore year.

It really depends on where you intend to apply. The UCs do not accept Math 1, Stanford recommends Math 2 if you send a math, Caltech requires math 2 of all applicants, and the engineering and sometimes science colleges of some universities require math 2 if you are applying engineering or science. Nevertheless, for most colleges and most majors that require or recommend subject tests, it makes no difference if you have nath 1 or math 2

Math II has a nice curve on it; you can miss several questions and still get an 800. I personally skipped the last 4 (time; It’s not diffficult to finish in the time limit, I just wasn’t watching the clock) and still got an 800. So, far more students (11% ish) get an 800 on the level 2 whereas less than 1% get an 800 on Math level 1.

Math II is preferred, but if you find yourself scoring in a higher percentile in Math I on the practice tests, it’d probably be better to go with that.

i have a similar question: i’m applying as a liberal arts major and i already got an 800 on the math level 1 as a sophomore, so will taking level 2 on top of that help me, or is it not really worth the time?
