on campus housing at UCSD with no car

or

going to UCI, living at home, and buying a $5000 car

???

Unless UCSD is a lot cheaper than UCSB the first option would cost more.

why is that? ok ucsd living on campus is around $21,500. while uci is $16500 to live at home plus a 5000 car= $21,500. so wouldnt the cost be the same?

Why does it cost so much to live at home? Tuition is around $2,500 each quarter, so $7,500 a year. Are you an out of state student?

no. i am in state.

Is the experience living at a dorm worth a $5000 car?

my parents are making me live at home but they say i will have a car. yes i would rather live on campus with no car, but then again, i am not the one making the decison, my dad is the one.

You also need to factor in the very high cost of gas. Doing so might render living at home the more expensive option. How many miles will you need to travel each day to UCI? How fuel efficient is your vehicle? You might be able to make a case for this argument.

from uci to my house is about 15 minutes round trip. i would probably have a honda civic.

Is there traffic involved in that 15 minute drive? Figure out exactly how many miles you would go and how many days a week. Also you burn lots of gas doing city miles vs. freeway driving. Sounds like you need to devise a math formula and then convince your dad that based on your calculations UCSD is the less expensive and better academic choice. Have you shown him the research about the campus rankings for your major? How many nights a week would you go out if you stayed home? (using the car) Would you frequently need to go back over to the campus for study groups, sports, clubs, or to meet with your professors? Create a picture for your dad of the complete college life and why living at home would spoil that opportunity. Have you been in trouble either academically or with your school recently? Perhaps your dad wants you home so that he can keep an eye on you. If that is the case, no argument will help. Perhaps you need to demonstrate to him that you are mature enough to go away to school and do well.
