Which WUE schools are good?

Hi, I’m looking to apply to 2 more schools with 2 more fee waivers and wanted to pick 2 from the Western Undergraduate Exchange list http://wue.wiche.edu/search_results.jsp

I’m, however, conflicted with which I’d like since I can’t tour any of them!!

I haven’t for sure decided on a major but am interested in humanities fields
I have a 3.85 unweighted, 3.92 weighted, have taken 5 AP total and got A’s and B’s. I have a 1180 CR+M SAT and a 1770 SAT total.
I wanted to go to ASU but since theyre only on the non-Tempe campuses I decided to disregard it and disregard U of A.

If you know of any good ones on those lists, please let me know what you think of them!!
Finances are a burden for my family but not so much that they’d limit me from going OOS.

I’d prefer
-good professors
-good nearby off campus food w/ okay oncampus food
-ability to live in dorms or on campus apts for all 4 yrs
-WUE to apply to ALL programs at this school
-if none on the list are good in your opinion, tips on what else (price is important)?

please let me know! I’m open to all those locations on the list

if youre from my previous posts, disregard everything i said in the past about being a teacher and etc. THANKS!

And good internship/job opps!!!

I’m from Washington and know that Western Washington has a good reputation, at least in western Washington. Washington State University is also supposed to have some good programs.

I don’t know enough about other universities to help you out, but in general, the University of STATENAME schools are the best, followed by STATENAME State University, followed by others. However, there are a lot of exceptions to that.

@thatrunnerkid Thanks:)

With the WUE, you really have to dig in school by school and even major by major. As you noticed, you will not find bigger state flagships on the WUE. Or perhaps you see them listed and then see they only offer the WUE for one or two majors.

My friend just sent his daughter off to Nevada Reno. It was a great fit for her (loves winter sports and lifeguards in to summers).

Have you considered University of Utah?

Colorado State is a good call, but I know it gets tougher and tougher to qualify each year.

Boise State perhaps?

@arc918 University of Utah – people have said they raise their tuition each year and I’m worried about that :confused: I’m looking at Boise State now, thank you! I’m from CA and since here Cal STATEs are less reputable than Universities of California, my parents dont like any schools with the word “State” in them. It’s strange.

S goes to Fort Lewis, it meets most of your criteria, but S really really hated the food.

Double post

@nw2this Haha, thanks for letting me know :slight_smile:

I’m a CPA in So Cal (have been for 25+ years now). There are TONS of successful people from Cal State schools, I know from doing their tax returns. We live near CSULB, I see lots of kids go there who are otherwise qualified to go to UCLA or UCI.

Sure, I’d take a degree from UCLA over one from Cal State LA. But once you get into UCR vs. SDSU or perhaps UCI vs. Cal Poly SLO, it becomes less clear. Even more so when you consider the extra cost of the UC schools.

Be sure to tell your parents that some state flagships have the word “state” in them - like Ohio State.

Lastly, you can expect most schools will raise their tuition every year.

Good luck!

@arc918 Did the college you attend affect your job prospects? Also, final thoughts on Washington State? Boise State wasn’t my cup of coffee.

I don’t know too much about Washington State, but I’m sure their graduates do just fine.

In public accounting, you can have a successful career from (most) any school.

@arc918 Thanks!

Not WUE, but you might qualify for a full tuition scholarship at University of Arkansas Monticello.

@nw2this Thank you!

Washington State is a huge party school. Lots of alcohol, fraternities, and sororities, drug use, etc. Of course, you’d definitely be able to find your place, just thought I’d let you know. Likewise, the meals they serve are pretty terrible, but the dorms and the professors are nice.

Pullman isn’t a terrible town; it does get very cold in the winters, however, and the driving to get to the nearest cities is pretty terrible (i.e up to Spokane, to Seattle, to Boise; students die on these roads every year). Luckily, Pullman has all that you’d need.

I’d say look into University of Idaho (only 8 miles from WSU in Moscow, Idaho), and University of Utah (probably the best overall school in the WUE).

Good luck!

@Integral69420 What makes you think U of Utah is the best of them? Education quality? Environment? Opportunities?

Mostly environment. Salt Lake City is a nice town with nice people, and there are many things to do outside with mountains and trails nearby. The people that attend are usually really nice, and driven. It isn’t as big of a party school like Washington State (mainly because of the LDS church presence in SLC), but if you are in to that, it isn’t hard to find some smallish parties. University of Utah has a beautiful and safe campus.

I can’t really speak for education quality and opportunities, though I’d assume that they are similar to those of the other WUE schools.

D looked at University of Utah for Engineering, but did not apply. Pluses: light rail, amazing honors dorms, great student rec center, lots of outdoor activities that are easy to get to.

University of New Mexico has really low tuition so even at WUE 1.5x in-state, it’s still a comparative bargain. Decent sized city, easy to get to (airport is 10 minutes from campus), lots of nearby restaurants, downtown with more restaurants, clubs, museums, zoo, etc. is very close. Good city bus system (free for college students) Research I, has just about every major you could think of. Hiking is a 30 minute drive; skiing in an hour. Light rail to Santa Fe. Lots of sunshine but has seasons too.
