Did anyone else get the comment about Carleton football in the movie “Whiplash”? Not sure how they picked Carleton as their random D3 college reference, but it was amusing.
I haven’t seen it but now am curious.
“I got a reply for you, Andrew. You think Carleton football’s a joke? Come play with us.”
Couldn’t find a YouTube clip
The football players I knew at Carleton had a good time with it. That is what matters!
…Glad Carleton made it into Whiplash…I think
So, another reason to see Whiplash.
It’s nice to see familiar names here ( @fireflyscout @youdon’tsay ). My S graduated in 2011 but our youngest has applied this year, so I’m back hanging around CC while waiting on final decisions. Sigh, good times, good times . . .
Good luck, limner! I’m on cc every day but not necessarily the Carleton page. What other colleges are on the list?
She’s been accepted at Grinnell, Earlham, and Hendrix, all with merit (whew!). The others are all highly selective–Carleton, Oberlin, Reed, Pomona… She’s going to Grinnell for an accepted students visit and is really excited to see it. We’ll see how it all shakes out.
I know very happy graduates from Grinnell and Hendrix. Great choices! How likely is it for her to attend Carleton if she gets in? I couldn’t even get ds2 to apply. He did apply and get into Pomona (and Claremont McKenna), but I liked it better than he did, and he ended up going to the East Coast.
Hi limner and YDS!
Good luck to your daughter, limner - she already has great choices!
Thanks, Firefly! YDS, I’m not sure how likely she is to attend. She took charge of her admissions process last summer and we’ve just stepped back and left her to it–with some advice on matches and safeties. So Carleton was her choice alone. I know she loves it, but she may want her own fresh start without being in her brother’s shadow at all. We’ll see!
Plenty of opportunities to create your own shadows, so to speak, at Carleton. I get it though, I was the youngest of five and the only who didn’t choose Notre Dame
I agree, @bluecollar. I think Carleton is an amazing place. But I’m going to keep my mouth shut as best I can.

^ Whiplash clip
I just watched this movie, and it was AMAZING.
Thanks, hangingtree. I’d heard the movie was intense. That dinner table doesn’t look fun.
So I watched Whiplash. While I genuinely liked the movie, I hope Carleton either quickly forgets that it was mentioned in the movie or pushes back.
The reference to Carleton seemed to be a just a put down…like Carleton students don’t choose career paths to lead them to play in the big leagues (whether in football or music). I don’t agree that this is the case, but it would be great to see a Carletonian article or something arguing with this.
No doubt some found the reference funny, but I missed the humor. However, I think it could be a great point for discussion. That is why I liked the movie “Whiplash”…there were lots of great points the movie was making. The movie basically criticized almost every subject it brought up.
I’ll have to watch it. I saw the clip, of course. But I’m still bummed Linklater didn’t win for Boyhood so haven’t watched any of the other movies since then. Been spending all our free time watching House of Cards, but we just finished that yesterday so I need to find something else.
