White applicant at Howard?

Hello all, my daughter is white but interested in Howard. Can someone tell me if it is reasonable to apply? I see that it is not 100% Black students but also looks to be completely POC. She is 25% Armenian (brown, non-European) but identifies as white.

I’m sorry if this is an offensive question and am open to being educated.

Thank you

Yes, if the usual criteria of suitability are met (affordability, academic offerings, admissibility for the student, etc.).

Although Howard is not popular with White students, some do attend (35 out of 8,964 undergraduates listed in section B2 of its 2021-2022 common data set, although there are also 1,254 unknown race, 391 two or more races, and 577 Hispanic / Latino students, some of whom may be White). Race/ethnicity is not considered in admission (section C7).

Has your daughter visited Howard? If not it may be worthwhile to do so.

@ChangeTheGame I think you have kids at Howard…

I have a kid who is a recent Howard graduate and a student still on campus. It is reasonable to apply to Howard. It is a very good school that has provided my kids world class opportunities and I believe that students of all races can thrive in Howard’s environment. I am one that believes in students taking a visit to the campus if possible so they can see the campus culture and get pros and cons from students. Please feel free to ask any specific questions and good luck to your daughter as she navigates college application season.

This was several decades ago, but I was actively recruited to Howard despite not matching their traditional demographic. It is an excellent school; I would encourage you to visit and apply.

Thanks to all of you for this! I’m very encouraged and we will plan to visit when we (hopefully) go to DC n December. Would love to hear anyone else’s thoughts as well.

I discovered this website recently and have spent hours reading on it, and feel so much better as we start the college search.

Thanks again
