White House Internship

Caramel, that’s awesome that they are providing you with housing, that’s a huge help. I’m not sure what I am going to do. I have looked at some of the intern housing programs, they are crazy expensive though. I haven’t tried Craigslist yet, any luck on Craigslist Ems?

There are definitely places to live available on Craigslist. Aside from not knowing where my internship is going to be, I also know NOTHING about the DC area. There are a lot of apartments/rooms available around DC (in VA, MD, etc), so before I actually start looking I need to do a little more research as to where I actually want to live.

The prices also vary widely, so depending on how much you’re willing to spend on housing can severely limit or broaden your options (on Craigslist at least). Its hard though at this point, because I don’t want to commit to anything until I know what I’ll be doing.

I had received the email from DPC asking for two additional writing samples only a few hours before the deadline due to the fact that the email ended up in my junk mail folder and I was at a conference. So I ended up sending them the two samples that I had in my mail folder, which were not related to US Domestic Policy.

However the samples I sent them were ones that I have published. But so far I have not received any calll for an interview unlike some of you’ll (lucky ones  ) who were interviewed. I have received many offers from the public and private sector but I have turned them down as I always wanted to work at the White House or atleast do an internship at the least!

Anyways, I am hoping for the best.

Hi, I’m interested in applying to the WH Intern program for Summer 2011. I just checked out the application, and am a little confused about what a policy memo is - can anyone who has already completed this give me an idea of what this should be? I guess I’m sort of confused about formatting, and what makes this different from a short persuasive essay.
Thanks so much, good luck everyone!

RuckRugby: I was unsure of how to go about writing a policy memo when I applied for the Spring. I found the following website to be very informative:
http://www2.eastwestcenter.org/research/popcomm/pdf/8_Writing_a_Decision_Memo_and_Giving_a_Policy_Briefing/Policy_memorandum.pdf

I think the general idea is to write about a policy issue that you are knowledgeable/interested in, following that general format.

Hope that helps!

Just one more weekend guys, then we should know

This may be the longest weekend ever (and the first time I’ve EVER complained about a weekend being too long!) Just a heads up though, from what I understand I don’t think we’ll begin hearing until later in the week

EMS630 and ShanWH2011- Were you inteviewed? I am still waiting for my interview. I am really not sure if that is a good sign or a bad sign. I have not seen many folks in this thread who have received interview calls!

I didn’t. Those of you who submitted writing samples, what kind of writing samples did you submit. In applying for other internships, it seems like everyone asks for short ‘writing samples’, usually 2-5 pages. As a grad student, I don’t write anything 2-5 pages long! Did your guys’ samples have to do with domestic policy or were they just samples of your work in another area? I’m trying to figure out if I should just write an extra essay and make that my writing sample.

Jonas, you’re right, it doesn’t seem like that many people on this thread received interviews… Good luck!

Hi Everyone,

I have also been following this thread but have yet to post. I am getting VERY nervous! I have received the vitals email but nothing further. It seems that not many have been interviewed thus far. Do you think certain departments will continue to interview over the weekend/next week?

Shan-Im a law student so I didnt have any short writing samples either. I used the introduction of a policy paper that I wrote. Then I used a short legal memo that I had to write. I think that you will be ok if you use a piece of any of your written products.

its been a long road, but we will know shortly.

Based on Whithouse’s suggestion, I’d rather not say what dept within DPC I interviewed with.

I had submitted 2 writing samples but not related to domestic policy as they were okay with that. I have published both these writing samples (one was a policy paper). But surprisingly, I have not received any call for an interview.

I am not certain if they are interviewing everyone. It is very hard to tell given that not many on this thread have received interviews (for Spring 2011). Also, I am not sure if they consider the applicant for only a single or multiple departments. Because logically speaking a candidate may be very good with communication or writing blogs and could fit better in a communication department as versus healthcare (for example)! So even if the healthcare office gets the resume, it would be too bad if they discard the talented applicant rather than sending his/her resume to the communication department.

White house suggested that we not tell the department?

I was interviewed, but according to what cobom1 said I would rather not say which dept it was with. There are many departments that we haven’t heard from yet (on here at least) which makes me wonder if perhaps some departments are making decisions based solely on paper applications?

Are you guys all grad students?

sorry i meant cobom1.

at this point, its all in their hands, we just have to wait, see and be hopeful. but i def agree that they should consider applicants for different departs. i bet there is a different standard/process for those who will be interning for the chief of staff, office of the 1st lady bc those offices are actually in the white house, versus, DPC is located in the eisenhower building.

DD was interviewed on Thursday-Nov 11th. I believe it was her first choice, having to do with Environmental issues. We are hopeful she will have her decision before Thanksgiving!

That is correct. Its better to not reveal too much about yourself until you get the final offer. You never know who is on here…

Just for a reference: I was never interviewed and still got in.

Keep your heads up people. Its almost over.

Thanks for sharing Cobom, that’s helpful and gives us a little hope :)
