Whitman sounds like a great, very nice, school. But there has to be SOME flaws, right?

IMHO, Walla Walla is a smallish town hours away from a large city. DS has grown up in an urban area and that's a concern. The school itself, though, is great and has a lot of activities to make up for the long distance from an urban center. I was really impressed when I visited.

And congratulations on being accepted!

The school is really small itself.

A high percentage of students belong to the Greek houses. About 30%. They're really integrated into the school -- sections of dorm buildings are where some of the houses are based.

Also, the school isn't very diverse when it comes to ethnicity.

And Whitman isn't very well-known outside of Washington.

That's what I could think of.

Walla Walla sucking as a town is about the only flaw I can think of.

There was another thread recently about the pain in the rear methods of traveling to Walla Walla. It usually involves long drives from Portland or Seattle.

Yeah, the location really is the only downside to Whitman. It's in the middle of freakin' NOWHERE, and Walla Walla sucks as a town.

It's funny that my top two college choices are polar opposites of each other (NYU and Whitman)

Artemis_D were you invited to interview for the Paul Garrett or Claire Sherwood Memorial Scholarship?

I live about 3 hours away and Walla Walla is for sure one of the suckiest towns in the inland NW...also it snowed 39 inches in one day when I was home for break. I don't think its as bad in Washington but if that doesn't bother you you're fine.

Junior has mentioned that the choice of classes is nowhere near as rich as the catalog makes it out to be. Maybe professor X is on sabbatical, or class Y is only taught every other year. To me that’s the downside of a small college.

Can anyone tell us about the history department at Whitman?

Like everyone else, the location can get kind of stifling, especially in the winter when it’s grey and cold. Also, the lack of diversity and basically everything else you get from being in a bubble in a very “white” part of the country. It would also be nice to have a more international emphasis. That goes with the bubble problem too though. These are that big of complaints though, honestly. =)

not that big of complaints**
